What Almost Was: Marvel Universe Fin Fang Foom

What Almost Was: Marvel Universe Fin Fang Foom

Jay Cochran - January 02, 2021
From Tony thegreattonino comes a look at what have been the next large scale Marvel Universe figure to be released after Galactus and the Sentinel from Hasbro if the line had proceeded. Here is how they describe it:

Some of you may remember this orange version of Foom from the 2011 SDCC display. I was lucky enough to create the paintmaster for this model. Tons of oversprays and paint washes really make this thing POP! The Paint scheme and purple shorts are the obvious difference between this and the green FFF build a figure, but this version also would’ve had a new torso, neck, and head! The reason for the new pieces...lights and sounds. This was a concept for the next large scale Universe figure after Galactus and Sentinel. I don’t have a pic of it, but he also had a really cool flame that connected to the mouth. I know designer @davidvonner was just as heartbroken as me that this never hit shelves. Thanks to @studio.dtw for the professional pics!

Not a fan of the soft goods shorts.

Not a big fan of the character but that paint job looks so good I'd be on board with this being released.

My guess had this been released, a green variant would have followed at some point. The Sentinel got released with multiple paint schemes and I don't remember for sure but I think Galactus had a paint variant released as well.

Like I mentioned in my comment, yes, he did. Galactus' variant used dark purples. I also would have expected a green version if this figure had seen the light of day.

Kinda weird the main release of this figure was going to be an impostor variant, but with the BAF having come in green, I guess they didn't want to devalue it.

I actually have those books and I forgot the story till @tarotre-educated usabout it.

I get really bummed when I see stuff like this. This thing will most likely never see the light of day. If (and that's a big IF) it ever does I agree with @ADourthat the smartest move would be that it be packed with a Simonson era Thor. Similar to how they packed the DOFP Wolvie with the MU version of the Sentinel, I would assume the set would be upwards of $100. That's also assuming there would be enough people being okay with it being waaaay outta scale with the 6" figure. My guess is there would be a lot of people that would be willing to do so just based on the Thor figure itself.

I like to think I'd have a wait and see approach to it, but most likely I'd succumb to the desire to want the figure and at least have an out of scale FFF rather than resign to pay scalper prices for the figure on EBay for the figure alone.

that Thor issue you just posted, yeah that was Midgard Serpent posing as FFF.

as written on Marvel's own site

"A disguised Thor faces off with Fin Fang Foom in Manhattan! But things are not as they seem with either combatant, as Fin Fang Foom reveals himself to be the World Serpent, Jormungand! Too bad for him that the Serpent's deadliest fear just so happens to be--the might God of Thunder himself!"

Ooh well there you go! I didn't remember that being a thing, thanks for the info, you do always seem to know it all

My guess is that it would have come with a Simonson-era armored Thor. Kinda weird the main release of this figure was going to be an impostor variant, but with the BAF having come in green, I guess they didn't want to devalue it. However, considering both Galactus and the Sentinel got variants, I wonder if this figure would have gotten a regular, green Fin Fang Foom variant.

With the Sentinel having gotten a Marvel Legends re-release, I'm going to cross my fingers real hard this could see the light of day... in green, of course. Man, that would make a good deluxe pack. Fin Fang Foom with 80th Anniversary-buck Neo-Classic Iron Man. "The Dragon Seed Saga"-themed.
