The Coming Of Mephisto Finally To Marvel Legends?!?

Jay Cochran - September 17, 2022
If you caught yesterday's Marvel Legends live-stream event from Hasbro announcing their 2022 Marvel Legends HasLab Engine of Vengeance Ghost Rider campaign, then you may have caught wind that it looks like we might finally be getting a Marvel Legends figure of the character known as Mephisto.

While Hasbro didn't specifically state they were releasing a Mephisto figure as one of the stretch goal tiers in this campaign, they did strongly hint at that yesterday including this brief glimpse they gave at the back of the figure's head they showed at the end of the announcement video portion of the stream. See image below.

The Ghost Rider campaign needs a minimum 9k backers before being funded and we likely won't find out for sure about Mephisto until that number is hit. The campaign is just over 24 hours old and currently has 3,345 backers.

Besides showing the back of the likely Mephisto figure's head, they also told us all the unlockable tiers would feature 6" scale Marvel Legends figures and that a few would be of a demonic nature. They also suggested they would be figures that they likely would never offer any other way.

Up until now the only Mephisto figure we have ever gotten was a 7" Marvel Select one released by Diamond Select Toys back in 2006, which to my knowledge has never been re-issued since then. As you can imagine that one runs for a pretty penny on the secondary market often running between $100-$200 depending on the condition. If your wondering, that figure originally cost $18.99 and came with a throne. You can see an image of it below. I still have that one and it does make for a nice Marvel Legends stand-in. While Toy Biz did a Marvel Legends Blackheart figure back in the day, they never did Mephisto, and of course the one Mephisto figure we got being a Marvel Select one only saw release at comic and specialty shops.

So what is it about Mephisto that makes him so controversial that companies seem so hesitant to release an action figure of him at for regular retail? Well put it simply, while he is a fictional character created for the Marvel Universe, for all intents and purposes he was basically created as Marvel's version of the Devil.

Here is the official description of Mephisto from the Marvel Database:

Mephisto is an extra-dimensional Demon who rules a fiery pocket dimension that he calls "Hell" or "Hades" although it is neither the Hell of the Christian religion nor the Hades ruled by Pluto, the Olympian god of the dead. Mephisto calls his extra-dimensional realm "hell" in order to exploit Earth human beings' belief in a single being of absolute evil, who is often referred to as Satan, who rules such a realm. Mephisto resembles the traditional visual conception of the devil. (It is not known whether this is Mephisto's true appearance, or one that he has adopted in order to resemble the devil). He also allows himself to be called names that human beings give to their conceptions of devils, such as Mephisto, a shortened form of Mephistopheles, the name given to the devil in the Faust legends[6] and of a possible fallen angel.

Indeed, Mephisto has allowed people to believe him to be Satan himself, however, Mephisto is not Lucifer. Mephisto's domain is inhabited by himself, by lesser demons who serve him, and by the astral forms of certain deceased human beings, which have been trapped in the bodies of demons. These demonic bodies imprisoning human spirits have been magically altered to resemble the deceased's mortal human forms. Mephisto is continually seeking to add more spirits of sentient beings to his realm by inducing living sentient beings to submit their wills to his. Mephisto apparently seeks primarily to enslave human souls, although he will go after those of extraterrestrials on Earth as well.

While I have little doubt Hasbro hopes to entice more people to back this campaign by including a Marvel Legends figure like Mephisto that is in decent demand, I also firmly believe them when they say this is likely the only way they could get a figure of this type of character released. It's a limited run through their own website sold directly to the adult action figure consumer.

Until we get a real honest to god Marvel Legends Mephisto, classic (pink face or otherwise), all who refused to back this Haslab project will never be forgiven.

if people didn't want to buy it for whatever reason, then that is their choice. There is nothing unforgivable about it. Their money, their choice. It's not just about you. This was a poorly price haslab and people spoke with their money which is their right. You need to grow up and realize that it not just about you.

Honestly, I dont need anyones forgiveness because I dont owe any other collector the realization of their toy dreams. Not to mention, that I dont have the power to stand in your way. The Hellcharger offering came across to me as insulting and greedy and its my own values I answer to when I dont participate or when I speak up about how I feel. If any person was able to influence another not to by this product, I see that only as a reflection that the offering was substandard according to what the market could support. That just economics, baby. My life will be identical whether anyone forgives me for that or not. You need to rage and blame? You do you, my fellow fan.

Its Hasbro who should feel your ire; locking a figure thats been requested forever behind an absurd paywall.

Oh calm down. Yeah it sucks but blaming everyone won't make anything better

Sadly it's not surprising that this failed, there was so many things against it. The Price, the lack of universal appeal, the poor choice of tier figures, the early bird figure, etc. Still I'll wait for Lizard faced Mephisto and Marvel Woman

Excuse us for having common sense. 350 for a car that I can get the equivalent of for 50 or less? Yeah, no. Mephisto will come

True. Despite what was said, I don't buy for a second that they can't release GQ or really, any figure they dang well choose. Especially since they barely deliver to brick and mortar in the first place, especially since they have Pulse, and especially now with windowless boxing? There's ust no excuse. Frankly, those exact figures not getting released is no loss, because we want the figures released in their classic forms. Refusing to make them now is just cutting off their nose to spite their face.

It is beyond all reason that you, I and anybody else, were completely free to buy the comics and statues these characters appeared in when we were kids, but now in the 21st century, are being told that they're too...whatever....to be sold in plastic action figure form, now that we're adults. I cannot even believe this is a discussion.

This is a good day. I hope the real lesson learned here for hasbo is that they need to seriously listen to their customer base.

Dwight said they can't release Goblin queen in anything more risque than the outfit she had for the Haslab. He didn't rule out one of her other outfits (more conservative), or another look for Mephisto for the future, but from what he told folks in interviews recently, it sounds like these exact figures are never coming out without the Haslab going forward.
