Harrison Ford Confirmed As The MCU's New General Ross

Jay Cochran - October 17, 2022
Following the report from last week we told you about, it has now been confirmed that Harrison Ford will be joining the MCU as the new General Thaddeus ”Thunderbolt” Ross which was a role previously held by the late William Hurt.

Ford will first appear as Ross in the upcoming Captain America: New World Order movie and should also be reprising the role for Thunderbolts. Whether Ford makes the transformation into the Red Hulk as seen in the comics still remains to be seen.

Captain America: New World Order will pick up after the events of the Disney+ Falcon and the Winter Soldier sees Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) take over as Captain America. The movie will be directed by Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Pardox).

I wonder if they will make him Red Hulk permanently after a couple of movies. It could explain why he accepted the role since it's going to be all CGI and maybe even A.I. generated voice like Darth Vader so he will sell his likeness in this role.

this was the thought that came to mind as to why Harrison would take this role, and why they'd cast him, he's a massive star that can carry a character, and if they just Red Hulk him out, he can literally sit in a chair and just make facial expressions for years to come, while some vfx dudes cgi his body.

and Marvel Studios can say "come see Red Hulk played by Harrison Ford" and the registers will ching ching

Agree. They could create a new character altogether. Keith David has the right presence, age, etc. to be a convincing govt official. I'd throw Jason Issacs or Joan Allen in the mix too. Brand new person with no ties to the comics universe at all.

Exactly create someone new do a Phil Coulson or if they are desperate from a Red Hulk from the comics there isRobert Maverick.

I'm more wondering if they can replaceT'Challa with a New Black Panther, why can't they just replace Thunderbolt Ross with a new character. What's so special about Ross that he has to still be around?

People who are pushing that think they mean well, but they don't really see how patronizing that actually is. There are any number of actors who would make a "social and cultural" impact. Outstanding as it was, he only had one feature length movie as T'Challa. Its about the character of the Black Panther, not the actor. Again, if Holland were gone for whatever reason, Spider-Man aint going anywhere. I understand thats the decision the studio has made, for now. I also understand that its likely to change in a few years too. I'm not against Harrison Ford playing Ross, I just can't see why he would, given the issues stated earlier ( not to mention the pay rate he'd likely have). I wonder, though, if Captain America NWO will possibly lead to him having an expanded role in another Hulk film?

I think it's not just MCU presence. Both did an amazing job in the roles and deserve equal amount of praise and respect for it. At the same time, the impact Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa socially and culturally and what he represents for a lot of people is much greater that what Hurt did, and that isn't a disservice to anyone, it's the role they played.

I'm more interested in seeing him play Ross than Indiana at this point

Ohhh I hate to agree but Crystal Skull killed my enthusiasm for new Indy films. Ive got high hopes but Im not optimistic for Indy 5

as far as Ford playing Ross.. hell be better utilized in an ensemble so despite his age, he could (and better) Red Hulk out and can see him sticking around for a few more MCU films.

Just yesterday I was talking to my wife about Thunderbolt Ross, and what a shame that Wil had to pass away, but that a good option for me was Jeff Bridges after seeing him in Old Man.

Jeff Bridges played Obadiah Stane in the first Iron Man movie.

I want Thunderbolt Ross to meet Nick Fury for a meta Star Wars reference. Harrison Ford better turn into Red Hulk in the Thunderbolts. Seeing a hulkified Han Solo would be so funny.

Granted TChalla > Ross as a MCU presence but why doesnt William Hurt get the same consideration?

On the other hand, many have carried the mantle of Black Panther so it is possible to go around that without recasting, but there really isn't another Thunderbolt Ross (I'd make a case for Talbot stepping up, and getting the dude from AoS to play him again sans the Graviton plot... but I'm not sure it would work flawlessly either).
