Marvel Select Fearsome Foes 4-Pack Green Goblin

Diamond Select recently released a Green Goblin figure single carded in its Marvel Select toy line, but has reissued it for the Spider-Man: Fearsome Foes four pack. The version from the four pack is the one I'll be taking a look at now. So join me as I take a closer look.

PACKAGING - Same as the others, Green Goblin comes in a giant window box displaying himself and all the other figures in the four pack. The front features artwork of all four characters, and has nice big, bright logos for "Spider-Man" and "Fearsome Foes", letting you know exactly what's inside. Green Goblin is posed in a strange almost leaping position, with his display base (his glider) packaged behind him. The back features photos of each figure, along with a bio for each character.

SCULPT - Green Goblin stands at just a little over 7" tall. The figure is basically the classic Green Goblin everybody is familiar with. There is definitely some artistic license taken to the sculpt though, particularly in the head. I don't mind that though, I actually like it when a sculptor can bring their own touch to an action figure. The head has this really menacing ear-to-ear grin with an angry looking furled brow. Lots of wrinkles are apparent in his face, making him appear demon-like. The giant pointy ears help sell that look as well. His hat droops behind him as if it's waving through the wind.

His arms and legs feature a nicely sculpted scaly looking chain-mail, while his torso is more like a purple tunic with lots of appropriate fabric wrinkles, and just a hint at the musculature of the man underneath. His entire body has a slender build, perfect for Norman Osborn. The only complaint I would have about the figure is that his head seems to be slightly too big for the body.


PAINT - Green Goblin is painted with some very nice colors. The purple areas of his costume are done in a deep purple with some nicely done black washes that really seep into the folds and help give him a gritty look. His belt is painted nicely, with no slop. His arms and legs seem to be painted with a black wash, and dry brushed with green and top coated with a metallic green. The effect is to make the scales look metal, and it's pulled off. I really like this touch.

His head is painted a very sickly green color with a light wash applied that seeps into the wrinkles of his skin. I don't know if it was done on purpose, but there's a slight gloss to his face, almost as if he looks slimy. I really like this, but I don't know if it was a design choice, or if it's just from the factory oils. His teeth are yellowed and his gums almost look as if they're bleeding onto his teeth. It's disgusting and I love it. His lips and around his eyes are a dark green, almost black. And his eyes are completely yellowed. There's not a single messed up area on the head for the paint job. It's really well done.


ARTICULATION - Green Goblin has a ball jointed neck, ball jointed shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, cut wrists, cut waist, ball jointed hips, swivel-hinged knees, and swivel-hinged rocker ankles. Most of his joints work well, though he is definitely a bobble head. Good luck keeping his head in one spot, it's really loose. He's really missing some kind of ab crunch, but even without it you can get him to look good on his glider. His legs have plenty of articulation for you to pose him on it, though you'll never get him into a pose where he's grabbing the front of it. He poses just fine by himself, but I suspect everybody will be posing him on his glider.


ACCESSORIES - Green Goblin has a couple of accessories. First, he comes with an alternate right hand that's just a fist. The hands holding pumpkin bombs are like that permanently. The pumpkin bombs are not removable. He also has a removable satchel you can put around his shoulders or not.

His final accessory is his display base. In this case that means it's his glider. It's sculpted as if it's taking off, with the base being flames and smoke. I really like how this is done, as it's very clever. The glider itself looks great, and very accurate to the comics. It has a great silver paint job applied and looks quite clean. The flames are molded in translucent plastic, with the flames blending into the smoky white color that's on the bottom and wraps around the top of the glider. Goblin can easily plug himself onto the glider and looks pretty awesome on it. Because the glider is at such a steep angle though, you'll have to make Goblin crouch really low in order to have him looking at any of your other figures.


FUN - He's pretty fun. He's got the name recognition, being a classic Spidey villain. He's also semi-decently posable which doesn't hurt, and the inclusion of his Glider is very awesome. Without it, I don't think any Green Goblin figure works or would be much fun at all. He's fun to pose with Spider-Man in various battle poses, but I find myself not really caring very much about the figure, really detracting from the fun factor.


QUALITY CONTROL/THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR - The bobble head definitely. Also, watch out for the foot guards on his glider. While trying to place his feet inside them to plug onto the base, I could hear one of them cracking. I was afraid it was going to snap off, but luckily it didn't. Still, be careful of that. And be careful of changing out his right hand. It was kinda tough at first, so be sure not to shear off the peg.


OVERALL - He's a pretty good figure. His sculpt is nicely done, as is his paint job. While he's not as articulated as I would have liked, he looks great with his glider and you can get him into some cool poses on that thing. The inclusion of the glider really helps and even though he's not too posable, he makes a great display piece. If you're looking for another Spidey villain for your Marvel Select collection, I'd say pick this one up. If articulation is a factor for you, you might be disappointed, but if you're just wanting him to look cool on his glider for your toy shelf, then this one definitely delivers.
