Marvel Universe Puck Figure Review

Marvel Universe Puck Figure Review

Jay Cochran - February 23, 2013

Hasbro delivers another member of Marvel’s Alpha Flight team with this new 3.75” scale Puck figure, but does his tiny size make for a lackluster figure or does he give new meaning to the term good things come in small packages? Check out our detailed review for this figure to find out

Check out hi-res images for this figure in our GALLERY below.

Packaging - The packaging for this figure is similar to what we have seen with previous Marvel Universe waves. The art on the top left corner of the card front continues to be done by comic artist Mike Deodato Jr. while the figure is clearly displayed below along with the figures name. The little comic shot is featured on the bottom left corner of the card.

The back features an image of the figure along with a brief bio for the character and images for other figures in the wave. Towards the bottom is an image of Alpha Flight’s Sasquatch who says “Collect Them All! I’m getting a strong Canadian vibe here.”

Sculpt - For such a small figure, Hasbro managed to pack in some pretty nice detailing here. Besides nailing Puck’s face sculpt to a tee, they’ve added some nice texturing on the arms and legs to give him that hairy look and feel. The left hand is sculpted completely open while the right one is sculpted as a closed fist. The open hand allows you to pose the figure in some hand stand positions which helps emulate the characters gymnastic abilities.

Articulation - Again for being such a small figure, Hasbro has managed to cram a fair amount of articulation into it. The head is attached on a ball-hinged joint allowing the figure to look left, right, up and down. He has swivel-hinged shoulders and swivel wrists. The legs also are attached to the body with swivel-hinged joints. He has swivel shins and hinged-joints at the ankles. Due to the small size of the figure, no articulation is at the waist, elbows or knees.

Obviously compared to normal sized Marvel Universe figures Puck is a little lacking in the articulation department, but you can still get him in some pretty cool poses and handstand positions.

Paint - Puck’s costume uses a standard black paint with a yellow metallic paint used for the P on his front. The skin tones on the arms, legs and face are decent. The detailing on the eyes and mustache are pretty good, especially when you consider how small the figure is. There is some noticeable bleeding of the black paint on his wristbands to his skin.

Accessories - Puck comes with a non-articulated white bird which is supposed to be Alpha Flight member Snowbird in her bird form. The bird itself looks pretty decent but because Puck has fat wrists, they had to make the wrist clip on it big enough to fit on the figure’s wrist which overwhelms the bird. I like the idea, but I’m not sure the execution worked out very well. I would add my normal complaint about a lack of figure stand here but because Puck is so small and is cooler to pose doing handstands, a figure stand really isn’t needed that much.

Overall - The poses you can put him in with the handstands is cool and it’s nice to have another member of Alpha Flight to go along with the Guardian figure, but I can’t help but wonder if this figure wouldn’t have worked better as a pack-in for an Alpha Flight team-pack instead of a single carded figure due to its small size. On its own merits for what it is, I think it is a well done figure. If you are a fan of Puck or Alpha Flight in general, I think you will want to add this one to your collection. If not, you might want to hold off on this one just because I don’t think you are getting your money’s worth as you do with the full-size figures.
