Hasbro and Marvel Extend Strategic Licensing Agreement Through 2017

Hasbro and Marvel Extend Strategic Licensing Agreement Through 2017

Jay Cochran - February 17, 2009
Hasbro, Inc., Marvel Entertainment, Inc. and Spider-Man Merchandising L.P. announced today that Hasbro will retain rights through 2017 to make toys and games based on new Marvel and Columbia Pictures theatrical releases and on Marvel’s globally popular portfolio of Super Hero brands, including franchises such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Avengers, X-Men, Thor and Captain America.

As part of the new agreement (the current agreement runs through 2011), Hasbro will continue to hold the global rights (excluding Japan) to develop products based on Marvel’s globally-known universe of more than 5,000 characters and Spider-Man Merchandising’s film and television properties in a wide range of toy and game categories, including action figures, role play and preschool toys, board games and puzzles. The new agreement covers both the “classic” comic book look of the characters as well as product lines inspired by television and films.

The license extension guarantees $100 million in royalties with the potential to earn up to an additional $140 million in royalty guarantees, contingent upon the release during the extension period of Marvel character based films that satisfy certain criteria.

In 2009, Hasbro is bringing to market a line of products based on the upcoming May 1 release of the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine, as well as great classic lines behind Spider-Man, Iron Man, Super Hero Squad & the Marvel Universe. Hasbro is also planning product and marketing programs based on several upcoming releases like Iron Man 2, Thor, The First Avenger: Captain America, and The Avengers.

“Hasbro is thrilled to extend our relationship with Marvel and Spider-Man Merchandising through 2017,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s President and CEO. “Through the years, Hasbro has consistently stayed on strategy as a brand driven company focused on our Hasbro brands, while selectively aligning ourselves with the best possible global licenses. As we’ve seen over the past several years, our licensing arrangement with Marvel and Spider-Man Merchandising gives Hasbro an even greater opportunity to expand our leadership position in the boys category.”

“Hasbro’s ability to secure this license through 2017 speaks to our execution as brand stewards and our ability to translate Marvel and Spider-Man Merchandising’s amazing intellectual properties into great toys and games,” said John Frascotti, Hasbro’s Global Chief Marketing Officer. “Based on our successful relationship to date, and in looking at the scheduled slate of theatrical releases in the years ahead, we feel very fortunate to have access to these great brands for such a length of time.”

According to Simon Philips, President, Worldwide Consumer Products and CEO of Animation for Marvel Entertainment, “We are very pleased to be extending our successful relationship with Hasbro. With the huge breadth of new Marvel entertainment offerings coming out over the next few years -- including feature films and animated television series featuring some of Marvel’s renowned Super Heroes -- we are confident that Hasbro will continue to fully leverage these properties on a global level. With their firm commitment to the Marvel brand, Hasbro has proven they are able to create innovative products that provide consumers with a standout retail experience. Our continued relationship will enable us to further extend the worldwide reach and image of the Marvel brand."

Juli Boylan, Sr. Vice President, Sony Pictures Consumer Products, the limited partner in Spider-Man Merchandising LP, stated "We are excited to continue our relationship with Hasbro for the Spider-Man feature film and television franchise. With innovative products that truly bring to life the top boys’ action brand in the world, Hasbro has and will continue to play a pivotal role in the success of the franchise."

Apparently the only way people can understand basic business is to work for Hasbro?

No, I don't think so. The tired refrain of "You must work for Hasbro" or "Hasbro Apologist" being applied to anyone that shows a shred of common sense about the overall situation here is really immature, I must say. Some folks here seem to think that Hasbro shouldn't be actually trying to make money, and instead catering to them personally. That's what I meant by the "charity" comment.

The Marvel Universe figures don't cost much/any more than the other non-generic 3 3/4" figures that are on the market right now, and toy prices have been going up across the board for the last year or two. Maybe if people paid just a tiny bit of attention to things outside of whining about a company that's only (at worst) half at fault for what's become of Marvel Legends, they might realize that too. There's a difference between agreeing with everything Hasbro does (I don't) or liking every single product they put out (I don't), and understanding why they do things the way they do.

I think Hasbro's Marvel Legends had good points and bad points. I didn't hate the line, but I didn't buy every figure they made, either. You could also EASILY tell that Hasbro's Marvel Legends didn't sell through (there's a difference between "selling through" and just "selling" BTW) nearly as well as Toy Biz. Maybe they were overproduced/overordered, but regardless, the long-standing pegwarmers from series one and two (and a couple from three) most assuredly hurt retailers' confidence in the line. That means lower orders (compare the amount of Two-Packs making it to shelves to the amount of figures that were on shelves for HML one and two), and less profits for Hasbro on the line. When profits start to fall, it's time to do something different before they become actual losses. That's simple business.

Hasbro can't "save" Marvel Legends on their own. The retailers and the consumers have to be behind the line as well.

Oh give me a freaking break....

All of you have brought up excellent points but you know what the people around here are right the reason MLs took a backseat is to sell the MU. It was the only way the could sell those awful pieces of plastic. I saw these on a toy run yesterday in my local Toys R Us and they are bad they're worse than hasbro MLs. I even put them in a side by side comparison with the Star Wars and Indian jones figures and they pale in comparison, the paint quality is awful plus the are so friggin' small shorter than the other 3/34" figures they had in the store. Next was the price 9.29 before tax for them when the Spider Man line was 12.99, for 4$ more I would get my plastics worth. Granted the price thing is here in Puerto Rico where they add shipping costs but you can see my point, instead I bought the Elektra/Ronin variant 2 pack. I know people here think they're great and are gonna get them and I respect their opinion but me, personally I think they suck. I don't know if this line will get better in time or it will tank, I don't care. But if this the future of marvel figures I don't any part of it. sorry for the long post I needed to vent.

Joes (on their stands) are smaller than MUs. I think the MUs are ok. Joes are better quality (at least the Joes I have compared to the two MUs I have). I didn't compare to SW or IJ (tho I don't think they are as good as the IJs my kids have - not even close).

I'm not posting to agree or disagree with any of the opinions that have been stated here, but there are some facts that can be cleared up with some simple research online. Took me two minutes to find the answers.

These are a couple of quotes from the Wall Street Journal dated October 18th, 2008:

"Wal-Mart Stores, accounting for more than one-fourth of U.S. toy sales..."

"Toys "R" Us lost its status as the nation's largest toy seller by revenue to Wal-Mart in 1998."

Wal-Mart may have nothing to do with what has happened to Marvel Legends at all, but to say that a company that sells over 25% of the toys by revenue in this country doesn't have some pull on the toy industries and what they produce is probably not accurate. Any mass toy manufacturer is going to do their best to provide product that sells well at good ol' wally world if only because they want demand for their toys from the largest retailer to remain high. However, Hasbro could have many reasons for putting ML on hiatus. It could be any of the reasons that have been speculated by those of you posting on here, or it could be something different entirely. Only Hasbro knows the answer to that one.

As a side-note... I hate shopping at Wal-mart.

I'm 24 and I have a small business management degree. I was a manger at wal-mart for 2 years. I think it would be great if hasbro would tell everyone why they are not for sure doing ML's. But, I would have to say it's not because of wal-mart it's probably because they want people to buy a toy that cost 1/3 less to make for almost the same price. But, next to the ML's on the pegs they are worth alot less. So, take away the ML's and if they sell the same amount they would have bought of the ML's then hasbro makes alot more money.

Finally someone who gets it and is making sense !!
