The Avengers: 1/6th scale Captain America Collectible Figurine Review

Hot Toys continues to round out their high-end 1/6th scale Avengers Movie Masterpiece figures with Captain America. After being spoiled by some of Hot Toys Iron Man offerings and last yearís Christopher Reeve Superman figure, I have eagerly been anticipating the release of this one. Today we take a look at this Chris Evans inspired figure to see if it lives up to my expectations or if itís a Hot Toys disappointment.
You can check out hi-res images for this figure in our GALLERY
The packaging for this figure is pretty standard for a Hot Toys figure. An outer cardboard shell features an image of Chris Evans as Captain America on the front. The side has an image of Capís wing from his helmet, and the back just has some basic legal information on it.
Once you slide off the blue shell, you will find a red box with a clear plastic window on the front so you can see the figure and most of its accessories. There is an Avengers ďAĒ on the bottom left corner. The back of the red box features credits for people who worked on the figure.
Once you open the red box, you can pull out the figure contained in clear plastic tray packaging. There it a clear plastic cover for this and then two tray levels. The first level contains the figure and most the accessories and the second level contain the figure stand, shields and alien blaster.
There is nothing terribly spectacular-looking with the packaging, but the figure and all its accessories are securely packaged so that all the contents remain intact and in place even when the figure is being shipped long distances.
The figure stands about 31 cm tall and uses a basic Hot Toys male body mold with about 30 points of articulation. The costume is actual cloth which looks very true to the uniform seen in the Avengers movie, but obviously isnít actually sculpted on like with a traditional action figure. The detail on the uniform is quite nice especially with the boots and gloves. Unfortunately where the sculpt falls a little short is with the head. This figure actually comes with two alternate heads, one with the mask on and one with the mask off. The mask on head is the better looking of the two heads but I canít honestly say its likeness to Chris Evans is that dead on. Itís not that this head looks bad, I just canít say it look a whole lot like Chris Evansí face. As for the head without the helmet, not only does it not look a whole lot like Chris Evans, the facial expression they decided to give this one just looks terribly off. I guess this is supposed to be an angry look but it just looks like he is grinding his teeth or something. Hot Toys figures and the likenesses they are based on are generally dead on so I was pretty surprised and disappointed how off these head sculpts were.
The paint on this figure is good. There are no noticeable blemishes and the skin tones on the head are decent. Again the costume is mostly cloth but the colors are tight and true to how they appeared in the movie. Cap comes with two shields, one that looks clean and the other that appears to have been through battle, both are nice using metallic looking paint giving the undamaged shield a nice shiny finish and the battle damaged one definitely looks like itís been through a war.
As I mentioned before, this figure has about 30 points of articulation using a standard Hot Toys male figure body, which normally gives a figure a wide range of movement. However because of Capís cloth uniform I found many of the figures movements to be somewhat restricted, especially in the shoulder and elbow areas. There was one pose I was trying to put the figure in where he is saluting but the arm would not stay in place enough to keep his hand up by his head because of how restrictive the uniform fit is.
This figures comes with a fair amount of accessories. He has 9 interchangeable gloved palms including:
- One pair of palms for holding shield
- One pair of palms for throwing
- One right palm for pointing
- One pair of relaxed palms
- One pair of fists
He comes with a figure stand, the two before mentioned heads, alien blaster, a cloth piece that attaches on the figures collar to look like Capís mask when he has it pulled off and two shields.
The figure stand which is pretty standard with all Hot Toys figures is nice because the figure doesnít stand very well on its own. The shields look nice but I was disappointed when I discovered the straps made of plastic arenít wide enough so you can have him wear the shield on his back. You also have to be careful with the shield straps because the buckles are made with very thin plastic that can break pretty easily if you pull on it too hard.
This figureís restricted movements due to the uniform hurts the fun factor on this figure because you canít get him in that many cool poses.
For a Hot Toys figure which isnít cheap I have to say I was a little disappointed with this one, especially since I am a huge Cap fan. As I mentioned in the beginning, I had been pretty spoiled by Hot Toys Iron Man figures, but this one just doesnít seem to match up as well with those in quality or appearance. If you have all the other Hot Toys Avengers figures then I imagine you still will want to add this one to your collection, otherwise you might want to wait and see what they do for the upcoming Captain America: Winter Soldier movie.
