Review: Marvel Legends Nemesis Series Beast
Marvel: Tom on 2009-05-13

Package Description
Hank McCoy was once a man, though he was always different. Blessed from birth with phenomenal strength and agility, his childhood schoolmates assigned him the cruel appellation “Beast.” When circumstances led to his appearance becoming truly animalistic, his nickname became a literal description, and he embraced it as a codename for use when working with his teammates on the AVENGERS and the X-MEN. He has made a home for himself as a teacher and a scientific expert at the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. As a result of tortures – tortures that resulted in an occasionally unstable intelligence, along with his current leonine appearance – inflicted on him by APOCALYPSE and Cassandra Nova, he has become the master of his more truly beastial side, making him highly resistant to mental control.

Appearance 9/10
Beast has a new, highly detailed sculpt with this figure. Stylistically he looks like he was taken right out of the comic book. The fur is sculpted all over his body and the uniform looks like it’s actually sitting on top of the fur. The proportions were done right also, with wider than usual shoulders and hands almost down to his knees. There’s a lot of detail in the sculpt to enjoy, but that’s where the good news stops. Most of the figure is molded in blue with no paint wash, which is a little dull. But visually most of the attention is drawn to the pants with the alternating bright yellow and dark black. The paint application of the yellow stripes is not clean, and on the black background it’s highly noticeable. It adds a messy look to an otherwise highly detailed figure.

Beast fits in well other figures, and looks great with the Astonishing X-Men. None of the joints are overly obvious. On the shelf he tends to blend in with the other figures. Overall he’s still a nice looking figure, but he needs something to bring out the sculpt details like a paint wash.

Articulation 7/10
Beast has ball jointed shoulders, elbows, and wrists. The shoulders and wrists have good range of motion but the elbows bend less than ninety degrees. The head is ball jointed, but can’t look up because of the hair sculpted in the back. In the legs Beast has the odd combination of ball jointed hips and double pinned knees. To make matters worse the legs rotate outward at an angle, making it near impossible to keep his feet flat. Just for that awkward combination the articulation score goes down form a nine to seven.

Poseability 6/10
Beast can do hardly any dynamic poses because of the awkward articulation described above. His balance would be fine if there was a cut at the hip to allow rotation, but as is it’s hard to put him in any pose except standing straight up. The range of motion in the arms is fine, but it doesn’t do him a lot of good with his legs the way they are. People buying this figure will have to be content with him basically just standing with the other X-Men. Compared to the Marvel Legends his poseability is abysmal, and gets a failing grade.

Final Judgment: 22/30
This figure isn’t worth buying unless you’re after completing the Astonishing X-Men. While he looks fine, his articulation and poseability are well below the standards set by other Marvel Legends.
