Logan Non-Spoiler Movie Review
Movies: Jay Cochran on 2017-03-03

If you like dark, brooding, depressing and ultraviolent super hero movies then Logan is the movie for you, otherwise I would recommend passing on this one.

Logan is set in the not too distant future. I don't really know if this is supposed to be part of the same timeline as the previous X-movies or some kind of alternate timeline, but suffice to say things have not gone well for our X-heroes. The movie begins with Logan (Hugh Jackman) working as a part-time limo driver who is suffering from a weakening healing factor while Professor X (Patrick Stewart) has become a withered old man with a debilitating disease. Soon the pair are given an opportunity at redemption as they find themselves tasked with the responsibility of protecting a young girl named Laura (Dafne Keen) who shares many of the same attributes as Logan himself. Laura is being pursued by a group of cybernetically enhanced mercenaries named the Reevers who will stop at nothing to get their hands on the young mutant.

The story drags at times and often takes violence to the extreme (Thanks Deadpool). This is definitely not one for the younger kids. Besides not having any real connection with the previous X-Universe movies, I think my biggest complaint for this movie is that it paints a depressing outcome for these heroes we have spent many years watching on the big screen. The only positive thing I can really say about this film is that Jackman, Stewart and Keen do give pretty strong acting performances. Perhaps if you are willing to look at this film as a complete stand-alone about two fallen heroes looking for redemption in the form of a young girl, then you might have a more positive take on this film than I did, but for me, when I go to a super hero movie about X-Men, I want something a little more uplifting and has more of a connection with the all encompassing universe 20th Century Fox is supposedly trying to create with its Marvel franchise.

In the end I don't really see much point to this movie other than maybe bringing Jackman's and Stewart's participation in this franchise to a end. Don't expect any kind of mid or after-credit scene for this one either.

Grade: C-
