Marvel Legends Fantastic Four Dr. Doom

Marvel Legends Fantastic Four Dr. Doom

Tom - October 19, 2007

Package Description
Obsessed with the conquest of Earth, Doctor Doom once laid his plans from a solitary castle hidden deep within the mountains of Eastern Europe. Early on in his career as a would-be conqueror, he identified the Fantastic Four as the chief obstacle to his ultimate (and inevitable) victory. Yet despite his obvious superiority to the quartet of Super Heroes, he has failed at every turn, often due to the incompetence of his allies and underlings. Now, he broods in his palace at the heart of his homeland, ruminating on the triumph that will one day surely be his. Certainly, should he ever again emerge to threaten the sovereignty of the petty nations of mankind, all of Earth's heroes would stand against him, but they will break like waves against the might of Doom!

Appearance
This Dr. Doom has a lot of things going for him. The cape is longer, and flows more naturally than the older Doom. The face mask is also better looking because instead of stickers for eyes, there are slits to see the eyes underneath. The colors match between the cape and tunic (again unlike the older Doom). The green also more closely resembles the colors used for him in his classic comic book appearances. While this Doom may not be more realistic, he does match better his appearance in comics.

One area the older Doom trumps the new Doom is the silver armor. The new Doom is molded in silver, and it’s a duller silver than on the old Doom. The duller silver and the plain comic green gives this Doom more of a plastic look. However, the new Doom conveys much better the presence and power of Dr. Doom. In particular, the hood covers more of the mask, giving him more of the brooding, planning evil genius look that he needs. Unlike the old Doom, this Doom has the presence of leadership and power he should have.

Overall, this Doom is a solid looking figure which could benefit from a softened plastic look. I think he should be satisfactory for most Doom fans, particularly those who like the older, more classic look that does not have as much a metallic appearance.

Articulation
Doom has a removable cowl, mask, and gun. The elbows, knees, and ankles are ball joints. As with the previous Doom, the tunic and armor severely limits the range of motion in the legs. As on the previous Doom, the arms can only bend about 90 degrees, but the head can move more under the cowl. As a whole, range of motion is very limited for this figure.

Poseablility
There’s not a whole lot Doom can do. Even if he could crouch, the cape would keep him from doing it. The hands also prevent him from looking good battling other characters, although holding the gun is a good pose for him. He looks good standing with older and newer legends figures though. Overall, he should look good on the shelf looking powerful and despotic, but don’t expect much else.

Final Judgment: 6
This is a good figure of Dr. Doom, and the best one out so far. He is about as realistic a Doom figure I would expect. But Dr. Doom is cursed by the need for a tunic and a cape, in addition to the bulky suit of armor, so his versatility is a lot less than the average Marvel Legend figure. For this, as much as I like the figure, the most I can give him is a 6.
