2012 Marvel Legends Wave 1 - Terrax Build-a-Figure Review

2012 Marvel Legends Wave 1 - Terrax Build-a-Figure Review

Jay Cochran - March 30, 2012

Today we bring you a review for Hasbro's 2012 Marvel Legends wave 1 Terrax Build-a-Figure by John Harmon from Mint Condition Customs. You can check out hi-res images for the figures below in our GALLERY!

PACKAGING - Technically Terrax does come in a package. Actually, he comes in 6 packages being a build-a-figure and all. It’s of course the same new Marvel Legends packaging we’ve come to love, and his pieces are always packed neatly to the center left in plain sight. I dig that.

PACKAGING SCORE: 4 / 5

SCULPT – Terrax’s sculpt is just fantastic. It’s 100% new and it’s awesome. He’s got great proportions, and finely toned muscle definition. His clothing is not connected to his body, and with the exception of his boots, nothing on the sculpt is specific to one character, so I could see them using this later down the road. For customizers, his body can be quite useful.

Oh, and there’s the head. Wow. Seriously. That is an amazing head sculpt. I love actual expressions on my figures, and Terrax has got one awesome expression that is sculpted to perfection. I love his cocked eyebrow, and his big sneering grimace, and that stony beard. It should be noted here that Terrax only has one open hand, so he can’t double fist the shaft of his axe (wow, did I really type that?), but regardless his sculpt is still amazing.

SCULPT SCORE: 5 / 5

PAINT – Hasbro’s really been knocking it out of the park with paint jobs in this new wave one. Considering how few paint apps there were on the original Hasbro Marvel Legends offerings, this is a very welcome change. Terrax has a great marbling wash on his stony parts that looks fantastic. At least I think it’s paint. It could be different colored plastics swirled together, something I read Toybiz used to do a long time ago. I’m not sure. Either way, it looks great.

There’s not a single bit of paint slop that I can see anywhere on him either. I will say that his clothes, gloves, and boots could use something more. It looks good, but it’s just a very bright shiny red. It looks too clean, and with all the destroying Terrax does, there’s no way he stays clean. Some kind of wash on these parts would have looked good.

PAINT SCORE: 4 / 5

ARTICULATION – Terrax has a good wide range of articulation. He has a ball jointed head, ball jointed shoulders, bicep rotators, single elbows, swivel hinge wrists, ab crunch, waist twist, ball jointed hips, thigh rotators, double knees, shin rotators, and the new angled peg rotator ankles.

I really like the new ankles Hasbro is using. We’ve seen them doing this recently on some G.I. Joe figures, and before that the only other time I’ve seen ankles like this were on the SOTA Street Fighter Revolutions figures. It’s actually pretty nifty, since it doesn’t break up the sculpt as much, it’s easy to accomplish, and you get an extremely wide range of ankle pivot. So yeah, Terrax has a lot of posability, and it’s useful to boot. Double elbows would have been welcomed, but I think that’s just picking nits at this point.

ARTICULATION SCORE: 4.5 / 5

ACCESSORIES – Terrax has the great pleasure of not only being an accessory, but he comes with one too! So few BAF’s come with accessories, and Terrax’s is a great addition. He comes with his giant Cosmic Axe that’s so big it had to be broken up into two separate pieces inside the packaging.

There’s no paint on it at all, but the sculpt is very detailed with lots of tech looking parts. I just love the design of the axe overall. There’s no paint detail, but it’s big, the sculpt is great, and it’s very character appropriate.

ACCESSORIES SCORE: 4 / 5

FUN – Usually it’s hard for me to grade this seciton, since I try to be as objective as possible, but sometimes my biases for the characters come through. Here, I don’t have that problem, because I have no idea who Terrax is and I think he’s EXTREMELY FUN. I know he’s a herald of Galactus and that’s it.

Before this figure came out that’s all I knew, and usually characters I’m familiar with are less fun as action figures, but Terrax is just eight kinds of awesome rolled into one. I think a lot of it is a combination of his great sculpt, that awesome face, and his giant axe. I guess I’m a sucker for big muscular angry dudes with giant things to wield (again, did I just type that?). So to reiterate, Terrax is a lot of fun even if you have no idea who he is.

FUN SCORE: 5 / 5

OVERALL – Terrax is an excellent figure, and very much a worthy addition to the Marvel Legends Build-A-Figure collection. Hasbro really knocked it out of the park with the new wave 1 which is really hard considering how hyped up the return of Marvel Legends was. It very easily could not have lived up to all the anticipation, but instead it really raised the bar for Hasbro.

I was really wary of Terrax at first too. After seeing the new wave 1 build-a-figure was such a short character (compared to the giant characters that preceeded him when Toybiz was doing things) I thought the figure wouldn’t be very good. Turns out I was completely wrong and Terrax was amazing. Not only that, but for those who have the Galactus BAF Terrax would go right alongside him, being his herald and all. While I do hope that Hasbro will start making some more giant characters into BAF’s (Sauron, perhaps a BAF Juggernaut, etc. etc. cough cough wink wink nudge nudge), it doesn’t take away from how truly a great figure Terrax is.

OVERALL SCORE: 4.5 / 5
