Joss Whedon's Challenge Of 'Ultron' For 'Avengers 2'

Outsiders - August 21, 2013
Joss Whedon has revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the challenge with being a screenwriter for Avengers 2 was to take a formidable villain such as Ultron and turn him into an more interesting on-screen character by stripping back some of Ultronís abilities and finding a way to humanize the bot.

"I knew right away what I wanted to do with him," Whedon says. 'Heís always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, heís got a bee in his bonnet. Heís not a happy guy, which means heís an interesting guy. Heís got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So weíll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [a new character, Scarlet Witch] whoís a witch."

"As a character I love [Ultron]," Whedon says, "because heís so pissed off."
