Earlier this week during their
Marvel Legends Live-Stream,
Hasbro began to tease their
2023 Haslab project with a video indicating that it would be something
Avengers based. Of course we fans immediately started speculating about what it could be. If
Hasbro decides to go back to the more successful large figure route like we saw with the
Sentinel and
Galactus, than the most logical choice would seem to be a figure based on
Avengers member Hank Pym as Giant Man. If
Hasbro decided to try doing a vehicle again like last year's failed
Ghost Rider campaign, then the most logical choice would be some kind of
Avengers Quinjet.
While I have no real idea what
Hasbro is planning, my gut feeling is they will do some kind of larger figure this year as opposed to a vehicle. So that puts the most likely choice back to being a new
Giant Man figure.
Toy Biz did a Build-A-Figure version which was part of a Walmart exclusive wave back in 2006 which stands just a little over 13" tall. That is still considered to be a solid figure even today, however if Hasbro decided to try their hand at the character for a Haslab, I would expect it to me more the size of their
Haslab Galactus or
Sentinel. Galactus stands 32" tall and the Sentinel stands over 26" tall.
Another strong candidate I could see for the next
Haslab is a new
Fin Fang Foom figure. Foom isn't one I think of as an Avengers team villain per se, but he has gone up against a number of
Avengers team members such as
Thor, Hulk and
Iron Man. So I feel like you could still slip him in under the
Avengers banner if you really wanted to.
Other reasons why I think
Foom could be a strong candidate for
Haslab is because I think he would have a wider appeal than
Giant Man, and I have seen several
Hasbro Marvel Legends brand team members bring his name up when discussing possible
Haslab choices. In April of last year during a
Marvel Podcast, Hasbro's
Dwight Stall mentioned that he would love to get a crack at doing a new updated
Fin Fang Foom figure.
Hasbro did a
Marvel Legends Fin Fang Foom Build-A-Figure back in 2008. It was a figure that actually required you to buy two waves of Hulk figures in order to complete it and one that is still highly sought after by collectors today.
So I wanted to put the question out to you all, just for fun. If you could choose between a
Marvel Legends 26"+ tall Giant Man or a new
updated/larger Fin Fang Foom figure for the next
Haslab project, which one would you choose? Let us know in the
COMMENTS SECTION below.
I am going to say none of the above. I'm sorry but it shouldn't be a Marvel one this time.
Instead I suggest Dungeons & Dragons Tiamat
Frost Giants are always the first thing that pop into my mind too. I'd also like a limbo dimension set - Sym, Belasco, Goblin Queen, some random demons. I realize this would be more of a 5 pack thing, but if it came with some kind of throne room play set maybe it would be an appropriate candidate for Haslab.
I'm not really interested in either. I would love to see some frost Giants.

A standard-priced HasLab is not really something I want to make room for in my budget, so for Fin Fang Foom, I'd rather Hasbro just dusted off the scrapped Marvel Universe figure they designed than make him a HasLab project.

Well, I'm not getting any Haslab projects, but if I were to, I think i'd take Fin Fang Foom first. A Quinjet would be pretty neat, too.

I just chose this 90's Goliath as my BAF for my build wave in another thread! My wave was based on the 90's Avengers/X-Men Bloodties crossover.
I would prefer Giant Man over Fin Fang Foom

Would there be a way to make swappable parts, so you could have either a Hank Pym Giant Man/Goliath or a Clint Barton version. For the Haslab pricing, could this be a possibility?
Many import toys feature swappable color plates, so it is possible. The thing is that would have to be built into the design of the figure from the start which makes it much more complicated and consequently more expensive to make. With that they would either have to decide to include a swappable character scheme (ie. Giant Man/Goliath) or be pretty darn sure they would reach the tier rewards to unlock an alternate scheme just to justify the cost of the mold(s). I thought about that a lot and it just seems to me to be a gamble Hasbro would not be too keen on taking. From my standpoint, as a collector, if they offered 2 or 3 character schemes (GM/Goliath/Yellowjacket/etc.), I would buy 2 or 3 products so I can have and display them all. But then again, as a person who bought 3 Sentinels and only 1 Galactus, I was sure the Sentinel would end up being the better selling Haslab, but I think Galactus edged it out by a fairly sizeable margin. So really no one knows exactly what's gonna bring in the customer base. Obviously, Hasbro must have had a lot of faith in that Engine of Ludicricity to push that out but it was a gouge just a bit too deep for most of us, and quite disrespectful to the fanbase, IMO. To this day I seriously don't understand what they possibly could have been smoking to think that thing would fly. They seriously just need to have a better ear to the ground and just listen to what the fan base wants.

The same people who would buy this under an over priced "crowd funding" umbrella, would buy it as a specialty item on Pulse or whatever other outlet. Be honest, hasbo knows there's no risk to them of either of these suggestions not selling. They're not some hobby shop working out of a garage, that doesn't have the funding and resources to make these things. They screwed up last time by overcharging; the car is just not the same as a Sentinel or Galactus. A Giant Man isn't the same either. Nevertheless, every haslab doesn't have to be $300.00+, just like not every Legends figure has to be the same price.
The tooling for these things is expensive---probably around $250,000 to cut the molds, so hence the min 10,000 backers for a given project. That's also why if they get in more bodies in the door on a project, they can offer stretch-goals and still maintain their profit margin on the thing. So far, they are unlikely to use any of the Haslab tooling for purely mass-retailer items, but maybe for the 6-inch added figures. Retailers probably don't want to front the cost for something like Jabba's Sail Barge or Galactus because the self-footprint is just too large, so Haslab just bypasses those folks, but they also then forego the retailer paying for that same tooling.
