It's been almost three years since
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse debuted in theaters, and fans of Sony’s animated franchise have started to speculate about the long-delayed third installment. Word has now come from the very top that
Beyond the Spider-Verse is still in on track for a June 18, 2027 release date. According to writer-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller the sequel’s delay has come down to them wanting the next chapter to meet the high standards set by its predecessors.
“Having to take it apart to put it back together again was really, really [the] real thing that made it take longer,” said Miller recently in and interview with
Gizmodo's i09 while promoting
Project Hail Mary (in theaters March 20). “There’s no one that puts more pressure on us than ourselves, wanting to outdo ourselves each time and see things that you haven’t seen before and make it feel like something you’ve never experienced before. And so, trying to get something that is as worthy as the previous two has been the driver.”
Lord agreed, adding, “The main trick is to play free. And to have the whole team understand that their job is to try stuff. To make mistakes, to see where this could go. And I can report that they’re going hard. It’s so great.”
