Wizards of The Coast Reveal New Cards, Hint at More Marvel Sets

MagicCon: Las Vegas 2026 is a three-day event taking place this weekend with panels, play events, and special guests dedicated to Magic: The Gathering (MTG), the collectible trading card game. Created in 1993, the game features a deep, strategic, five-color mana system, played both physically and digitally with over 50 million fans worldwide.

At the first big panel, Wizards of the Coast debuted new Marvel Vision and Mind Stone cards that are part of Magic: The Gathering’s big “Universes Beyond” initiative, which adds in third-party IP to the popular tabletop trading card game. The company previously released a Spider-Man set and the Marvel Super Heroes set launches on June 28.

MCU star Paul Bettany, who plays The Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), took the stage to help unveil the new cards. Bettany also added a Mind Stone gem to a real-life version of the Infinity Gauntlet. The Spider-Man set included the Soul Stone as a chase card with three different versions, and Wizards of the Coast confirmed that Marvel Super Heroes will include the Mind Stone in a similar way.

It was revealed that Vision will appear across multiple cards. In one, Vision, Synthezoid Avenger, he is an artifact creature with flying and the special ability that every time a player casts a spell when it’s not their turn, Vision can either gain a +1/+1 counter or phase out. Magic’s head designer Mark Rosewater explains, “One of Vision's powers is that he can change his density so he can make himself very dense, which makes himself extra strong, or he can make himself lose so much density he can actually pass between objects. And when he does that in the comics, they refer to it as phasing.” Phasing in Magic is a mechanic that causes a card to temporarily leave the game—treating it as though it doesn't exist—before returning at the beginning of the owner's next untap step.

There will also be a rare version of The Vision with flying and vigilance (card does not need to tap when it attacks). This card also has three special abilities from Vision’s vast power set, one of which can be selected every time you cast a noncreature spell. Solar Beam gives him double strike (allows a card to deal combat damage twice in a round). Density Control makes him indestructible (makes a card immune to effects that say "destroy” for a round). And Technopathy which lets you draw a card from your deck.

The Mind Stone cards are indestructible white cards that tap to generate one white mana. Additionally for one white and five mana, you can “Harness the Mind Stone” and activate its infinity ability, allowing you to exile up to one target nonland permanent that you control and returning it to the battlefield under its owner’s control. This will greatly benefit decks built around cards with enter-the-battlefield (ETB) triggers.“This is our headliner for this set. Much like the Soul Stone,” explained Rosewater.

There are six primary Infinity Stones, and so far one has been part of each Marvel set. Time will tell if we will see the remaining four stones appear in four subsequent sets, but this would appear to be the strategy.

I've had fun with the Marvel Magic sets. I passed on the latest wave of figure and MTG tie ins though I was tempted by Malice. But I preordered the gift bundle and the Gods of Thunder Commander precon. The latest reality fracture set is fun to open, and I may see if Target has the foundations precons and that Marvel Avengers Gift bundle still. I still am working at the FF, Spidey, and Marvel sets. I'll probably buy singles for those to get what I am missing.I am interested if this set appeals more to MTG purists that don't really like all the Marvel stuff. This seems more Mystical and Magic adjacent than Spidey, etc.

Was really excited for a moment when I saw the presentation because they showed a number of characters (particularly the Warriors Three) that have not had ML figures made. It's only the card game. So disappointing.

I am now picturing someone with the comic in their deck, trying to play the cover as a card...

((Seems like Hasbro took feedback on the lackluster Spider-Man set to heart. I filled out the survey they sent out, noting that the Spider-Man set lacked stuff for new players. I highlighted that the starter Spider-Man decks were kind of a disappointment because new players might be surprised to find that those starter decks feature cards that aren't even legal in standard. And the Jumpstarts aren't either. ))

Also, have to give them a bit of credit here in that a lot of these products have more accessible price points.

The Scene Box is kind of tailored toward collectors. You build a scene. You can still play with them of course (in commander but not likely playable in standard). But it's more of a 'fan' tailored thing to appreciate the artwork.

There are two scene boxes...

Heroes United and Villains Unleashed. They are borderless cards meant to fit together. They would look nice in a binder.

The Draft Night Bundle is $120. It's designed with 4 players in mind and has 12 play boosters, one collector booster, and 90 lands. The Gift Bundle is $90 and comes with one collector booster and likely the same 9 play boosters that come with the standard "bundle," which is $70.Commander Decks are 100-card decks designed around the "commander" format, where a legendary card serves as your "commander". All the cards in the deck have to adhere to the same color identity as your commander. So, for example? The Doom Prevails Commander Deck is a Grixis Blue, Black, and Red deck.

Personally, if you were going to get any of the commander decks? I'd either go for the Doom Prevails or Avengers Assemble (Jeskai) Red, White and Blue. The reason being is I expect those will be the ones that are more sought after at least initially. The Cloud Commander Deck from FF has held its price around $72-75. The Tidus, Terra and Y'shtola decks have dropped in price. I could see the same happening to FF and Black Panther where they drop in price. (that's speculation on my part). You typically can't use cards from a Commander Precon in standard, however you can use standard cards in Commander. Two different formats.

As for your Collector boosters and Boxes? I won't yuk someone's yum. Buy what you like. But I think Collector boosters are a huge money pit, and you are unlikely to get out of them what you spend on them. (The commander precons typically have a collector booster sample). That is just me having seen a lot of unboxings and openings of them. They promise these special foil treatments and stuff. But you have to get incredibly lucky to get a highly desired pull. They had the serialized Chocobo or the "One Ring" Or the "Soul Stone". These cards are "chase cards" but you are very unlikely to actually pull them. IF you want fancy cards? Secret Lair is probably a better option. Or heck, even those Scene boxes personally.

______________________TLDR: If you are looking to learn how to play/start?

As someone who has returned to Magic? I can offer a few pieces of advice from personal experience.

If you are interested in these but have never played Magic?Your best bet is going to be to look at that Beginner Box. It's $40. A bit more than the $20 FF MTG starter set. But it has two decks ready to go. I am not too familiar with Jump Start, but it has some of those as well. They seem to be especially tailored to beginners with smaller decks. These jumpstarts are essentially take two packs, shuffle them together to make a 40-card deck, and you are ready to go. I think this may be new to Magic? At least I haven't seen it until this set. (Googled it, they have appeared before, back in 2020, and with Foundations).

The 60 card decks in the beginner box should be standard legal. If you want a good number of packs to crack open and jumpstart your binder collection? The standard or gift bundle would be my recommendation.

Sometimes it pays to wait. Don't give into the fomo just because you want a specific card. A lot of the FF cards have dropped in price considerably. And my last piece of advice?

Crack some packs and have fun. See what you pull. But when you reach a point where you start pulling multiple copies of several different cards and get little that you didn't already have? It's then time to buy singles.

And to @JayC's comment? I think we can fully expect more MTG crossovers. A MTG Cap? MTG Black Panther? MTG Hulk?
