SDCC 2022 - Hasbro Says Plastic Will Remain On Collector-Oriented Retro Style Cardback Figue Packaging

SDCC 2022 - Hasbro Says Plastic Will Remain On Collector-Oriented Retro Style Cardback Figue Packaging

Jay Cochran - July 21, 2022
Hasbro has issued a statement via Bossksbounty in regards to the removal of plastics from the Retro style cardbacks for lines like Star Wars Vintage Collection and Marvel Legends with the Retro Cardbacks.

Plastic Free Packaging

Our goal does not include packaging for fan collectible products like 3.75" action figures, where packaging is part of the product experience and typically retained intact for fan display and collections. Those lines include Star Wars Vintage Collection and Retro, as well as other collectible brands such as Marvel Retro and G.I. Joe Reto. In support of Hasbro's lower carbon strategy and upcoming science-based targets, our fan collectible blister packaging will continue to be made with either plant-based or recycled PET content.

So the plastic free packaging is nothing more that a publicity stunt to prove that Hasbro "cares" since they are keeping the profitable packaging with most plastic. If they have a more environmentally friendly plastic then why not use that for the rregular figures as well and if they want to reduce the plastic then make the window smaller and get rid of the wastefully plastic bubble inside.

The PET recycled plastic is the same plastic they've been using in their packaging for years. So this has always been a stunt because some bean counter figured they could save more money and some marketing guy figured out a way they could look good (to some) doing it.Don't knock that plastic bubble inside. It's not wasteful. A lot of people are going to miss the protection it affords, cushioning the figure from shock to the very back of the package. I don't think I've said this here yet, but I predict quite a few figures in the new plastic free packaging are going to break from poor handling at retailers like Walmart and Amazon now that they're going to be braced right against that back wall of cardboard. Also, since they're already starting to make exceptions for the whole plastic free packaging thing, I'm guessing the whole experiment won't last very long, and that they'll change it back by 2024 or 2025 at the latest.

I wish they at least waited on the specialty lines after 2023. The Spidey 60th and next year's probable X-Men and Avengers anniversary lines would have looked amazing with the plastic windows.

They should just keep the plastic on the regular carded 6"inch scale Marvel Legends figures as well. I do not feel like buying a plastic free Marvel Legend only to be disappointed that the figure has been replaced.

I heard they are going to use plant based plastic for the packaging.

Happy with this, good we can still get the Retro lines the way they should be, so Ghost Rider Retro wave then! and I guess we can check the Box that more Iron Man retro carded figs will be coming..Mandarin Mandarin! Classic Dynamo.

Well, I am relieved, I'll say that.

HaHa. What did I say? Funny how the money, money, money makes all the concerns of the world go away. The funniest part is that it's more or just a one for one wash. The retro/collector type figures' windows use approximately twice the amount of plastic that a typical ML figure's box uses so there really is no benefit. They're basically sacrificing one for the other and trying to still look like they're addressing some kind of concern. I suppose there is a little offset assuming more standard ML will typically produced per year but never put it past Hasbro to make sure the more expensive product take center stage. We'll just have to wait and see, won't we?

Basically expect more spidey xmen, avengers and iron man retro figures.
