I've gone through the same. Back in 2010, the things that I didn't like about the MK 6 was the "unconventional" arc reactor shape and the bits of silver. But I've mellowed out since then, in big part because later armors have doubled down on those design elements (take for instance, the arc reactor shape of MKs 46, 47, 50 and 85), making the departures of the MK 6 feel a lot less drastic in comparison.
In addition to that, the MK 6 has all the things I love about the earlier suits, the cleaner-but-still-sleek geometry and the well-defined areas of color.
