McFarlane Toys and Marvel To Create Toys Based on Todd McFarlane Artwork!

Ahhhh.....just the added ego boost old Toddsey needs. What could make this any better than getting to do my thing over another one of my things? Adding my signature to it. Lol. Todd is in total self satisfying heaven right now. I am very glad to see they're at least starting to call it for what it really is instead of calling it a POSED FIGURE. It's a statue. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Not only does he think articulation is ugly he hates it. He loathes it. He's said such on many many occasions. He thinks TOYS should be works of art and it's okay to abandon poseability over aesthetics. Are you kidding me? They are called toys for a reason. In their description alone they are made to be played with. And he makes no distinction between actual toys and what he does. He thinks of them as one and the same. This from the guy who revolutionized the toy industry in the 90's and actually made Toybiz want to do something better which lead to the modern articulation era. His contribution to the action figure world is not to be discounted but he only does any articulation at all only to be able to land licenses like Fortnite and Warhammer and DC. These companies wanted figures with full articulation and he only caved in order to get these licenses. The multiple sports licenses he had carried him for a while but before he landed the Fortinite license he was on the brink of collapse. If you look at what he does with his figures even now the articulation is only an afterthought. They basically start with an articulated structure and then they cover it with details and overlay and deco with no consideration if the articulation works or not in the end. And often outright eliminates some aspects of his already limited articulation standard if it interferes with the look of the figure too much. Anyone who's ever tried to pose a DCM figure knows what I'm talking about. And don't even expect any sort of scale. His disregard for scale is second only to Diamond Select. Sure the big figures are bigger and the average figures are average but even among other figures of similar size nothing scales out. His products are action figures in the worst sense. Only to get them in the toy isles. He's got an purely artist's heart. Which isn't always a bad thing but in the case of toys it is. This thing he's doing with Marvel is his dream job. This is what he's wanted all along. No movement, no scale, some seams, no reason to do anything with it but sit it on a shelf and look at it. This is his comfort zone and it wouldn't surprise me if he's just gone and left the action figure part of his business to one of his subordinates and is immersing his full effort into this. That certainly seems to be the case as quickly as he's churning these out. Whatever. Maybe the action figure side will get better. Personally I don't like statues. They look good but I don't have the time, space or money to burn for static artwork. But that's just me. From my experience there is a distinction between action figure people and statue people. But there is also quite a bit of overlap so I know these will appeal to many people as well. I just don't think this is going to be anywhere near as lucrative as his action figure line. I think this kind of thing will be able to survive because of the action figure line. Not in spite of it.

I'm not terribly interested in these. I've made the mistake of buying things like this before from McFarlane. I've got a handful of the DC Multiverse posed figures/statues and I made the mistake of buying his Jumanji stuff when it was 90% off. Even at 90% off, it wasn't worth it. I figure that eventually and inevitably that he'll have to run a huge clearance sale on these too and maybe I'll bite then, but I certainly won't miss them if I don't.
