Agree with @Atlantis, Hasbro could have just repainted the grey suit gold and called it a day. Toybiz did, it would be simple enough.
But they really went the extra mile with the skirt. Small, simple detail that makes this figure comic accurate instead of "good enough".
I get that were are in the midst of Anniversary celebrations but im so thrilled that Hasbro has been hitting the 60s costumes as well as some much requested 80s stuff. Here we are in '24 with the best versions of original suits weve ever gotten. Amazing.

Doom probably got away with it, since the grey is broken up by his green tunic, so any inconsistencies would not be as noticeable

Cover colouring depended on what colours were already on the cover. Like Uncanny X-men #4, The Scarlet Witch is Green, because they were afraid that with but Magneto and the Background being red, she would just blend into the background. Similarly with Doom here, there is a lot of grey behind him

No no. It's just the same reason as the Hulk. The printers couldn't keep a consistent shade of Grey, so they changed it.
I'm very happy they made this and more, happy that they went comic-accurate and added the lower apron instead of just doing a straight repaint. As far as the comic book reason why he switched from battleship gray to vibrant shining gold, he realized crowds that saw him were afraid of him as he looked like some lurching monster robot from 50's sci-fi movies. The gold was inspired by one of the girls he was dating at the time; she thought Iron Man should look like a knight in shining armor. And no doubt, the writers/artists probably found the dull gray boring too. Thus, the Golden Avenger was born!
Of course this eventually gave way to a more stream-lined, "superhero" look for the armor, and the Red & Gold version came out, his most iconic look. For decades though comics still referred to him as the GOLDEN Avenger.
I do wish hasbo had used a more vibrant, metallic gold paint, though. Very glad overall that they did this figure.

Happy they did this for everyone who wanted it, I'm good with the Silver.
Yeah, it was kinda silly. Apparently people were scared of his original look, so he spray painted it gold to make it friendlier. Even the Reborn Tony ribbed on it
