There's black splotches all over the red on that Iron Man that don't making any ink-rendering sense. These things are just a blinkin' headache.

That Iron Man statue is just silly. Metallic red but flat yellow. Shading on the red but none on the yellow...even where the shading should obviously extend into the yellow. And the source artwork has shading in the yellow areas, so....was this deliberate or just an epic screw-up at the factory. And then the sculpted lines in the yellow that don't appear to be part of the original art, so....why? Most of their statues so far have been at least good, if not really good, but this one is a head scratcher.

Re: Venom #5 Statue

Wow this thing is really amazing. I've long been a fan of Clayton Crain. I remember the first time I saw his work. I was like Wow this guy is McFarlane style but actually has understanding of how anatomy and body mechanics really work. I know McFarlane's and his McEgo make him lean to wanting to do statues after his own work most often but he really needs to do more stuff like this. Maybe some stuff by Finch and Kubert. Even stuff by Brian Hitch and Terry Dodson would be cool.

The McFarlane stuff is........dumb, imo.One key thing is the "inking" on the figures.......and how badly thought out that is. Characters on a flat page are inked and rendered to lend them a 3D quality and definition because there's no other way to delineate form on a flat surface. But the figures are 3-dimensional sculpt anyway, so the "inking" is both unnecessary and ugly/garish. It can be conveyed with a understated touch via a bit of shaded colour on the part being rendered. They did this with the DC Direct Jack Kirby New Gods figures from about.........16 years ago(?)......and it worked well enough capturing Kirby's signature squiggle -style rendering. With the black, and ( unfortunately) McFarlane's inking approach, the whole look changes one you start rotating the figure to any degree, in any direction. These would have, imo, worked far better as 3D placards, with a bit of relief molding on the facade and the inks done in the appropriate spots. As is, it comes across to me as slap-dash, and kind of pointless.

Re: McFarlane statues

I know these are just statues, I mean "posed figures". Give me a F break. But every time I see a new post and it involves the words Marvel and McFarlane I seriously have a mini heart attack for half a second. Like one day it's going to say McFarlane has taken the ML license. But he's really churning these things out as fast as he can think of them. I'll give him credit for that much.
