Though not perfect, I think this is a really good head sculpt. It's probably one of the best Mafex has done.

I have to say, I'm really surprised anyone thought to make this an action figure.

Though I was big on the proponent of Namor being and looking as superhero should, and instead he looked like a guy who is in shape (had to google cuz I could not remember if he was soft looking and honestly he doesn't look bad but his legs are a little thin and not nearly broad enough) just not hero shape they could have done a far better job on the physical athestics of his persona but other than that glaring issue I genieuly think they improvedon Namors character and background. I have never seen Huerta in any other media, so this was more initial reaction to his acting, and IMO he carried the movie due in part to bringing and delivering a different feel to the character that I thought was an interesting spin.
I really like Namor too. The rest of the movie is OK, but seeing him flying, with his ankle wings, and just destroying stuff made me giddy like a child! My only issue was him surrendering. That is the one thing Namor would never do. Things like this are non negotiable imo and Marvel should at least make a bigger deal about the details that define the character. I can deal with all the swaps and changes as long as those few ingredients that are throughlines of a character throughout their existence are retained. It didn't ruin it for me, but it irks me everytime I see it. I think Aaron commented on that in this recent 8 issue Namor series. His Mother admonishes him while training that he will never surrender no matter the consequence. So him surrendering and Shuri just sliding off a spear and fighting like nothing happened both took me out of it, but the movie was better than not overall.

Yeah, it makes sense to me. Now, about Namor I'm wondering whether or not they could retcon him in the future. To be more like his comic counterpart and to avoid any possible backlash, I do think he was still decent for how much they changed him, but you know just wondering. Or hoping I guess...

To me this movie suffered from three big issues. First off they should have recast T'Challa. They could have honored Boseman in the credits or even have done an editorial or testimonial before the movie started much like Tom Cruise did at the beginning of Top Gun Maverick with people from the movie. The idea that recasting the role may cause some kind of disgrace to his portrayal of the character or belittle his legacy is just ridiculous on it's face. The amount of people that would have complained about it would have been minimal. And that only would have lasted a short period if they'd managed to do a good job of it. With the way Disney claims they ignore the loud minority of people you'd think it would have been ready for the challenge. But alas as usual it's all just lip service. As far as who could have played the part I think a guy like Courtney Burrell who is another classically trained actor could have taken on the role and did it justice or even a guy like Justin Cornwell who even though many inches taller does look strikingly like Boseman when he does his facial hair the same way. Even a guy like Khary Payton who does T'Challa's voice on video games and animation could have done a great job. Of course he's on the older side but he can get in and consistently remains in very good and amazing shape all the time. It was just a bad move not to recast him at all IMO.
Secondly all the female characters were basically interchangeable. Don't get me twisted. I'm not complaining in any way about the female-centric cast. Just the opposite I think they all had the capability and had very high hopes that they would lead a good movie. But the actors playing Ramonda, Shuri, Riri, Okoye and even Nakia could have all just played each others part. They were all exactly the same person. They were all just this somber, tough, no nonsense, no humor, dry personality person. And I get it. The movie was of a serious nature and the responsibility Shuri has to take on as BP required amount of decorum that she didn't posses before but man I at the very least expected a little bit of fun and humor from Riri. She was probably the biggest let down of all. Absolutely no interest built up for her show that may or may not happen. In the end where the performance would have been appropriate for certain roles the fact that they all played the part made it just boring TBH.
Lastly, and this is the worst of all Namor was totally and completely and without a doubt miscast. This cat was the worst choice of any casting in MCU history IMO. I don't know the dude. Don't remember anything he's in. And I saw Narcos. So if he's been in anything I've seen he never left an impression but at the very least the guy could have made some effort to get in shape for the role. Not always the most important thing for a role but when you're playing a dude that spends most of his life in a Speedo and is rampaging bundle of muscle with crazy super strength I think the case can be made that he should have shown up better prepared to play the part. But perhaps that's on Disney. I mean for the most part lately the desire to get a certain person into a role seems to outweigh the attempt to get the person who actually looks the role by a big margin. But honestly there were a lot, a lot, a lot of actors of a certain Aztec looking descent that could have done a better job. Both in look and speech. And seriously believe me in my field of work I do understand genetics and age limitations and what not of what a workout routine can or can't do for a person and I'm no Hollywood level trainer but given 4 to 6 months I could have had the dude in much better condition than this. I mean he's in his 40's it's not like he's 70. I mean just to refer back to guys like Khary Payton. He's well into his 50's but seems to do just fine. Guys like Brad Pitt, Jason Statham and even the one and only Wolverine himself Hugh Jackman as well. I know it's not all about the look but his acting didn't do all that much to convince me any better that he was the right choice. A brooding angry king who doesn't say much but yells when he does. You could probably throw a rock in Hollywood and most likely hit any actor that had those chops.
Long and short it was well conceptionalized but terribly poorly executed. It coulda, shoulda, woulda been a much better movie had they done it correctly.
I never understood people's dislike of this movie, I absolutely love it. Namor was one of the best new characters in the MCU and Shuri's emergence as a more vengeful version of Black Panther was really cool to see and her suit is beautiful. Mafex doesn't disappoint but at $125 they better not lol.
