Could McFarlane Toys Take Over The Marvel Select Line From Diamond Select Toys?

Ever since it was first announced that McFarlane Toys would start making pre-posed non-articulated Marvel based figures last May, people have wondered if at some point might they start doing articulated figures? Earlier this year some folks even started trying to float rumors McFarlane might grab the Marvel Legends license away from Hasbro which of course turned out to be false.

Then more recently with the news of Diamond Select Toys shutting down, some wondered if McFarlane might be able to take over the 7" Marvel Select license. While I can't give you a definitive answer to that question, after listening to this interview Todd McFarlane gave to Carbon Scoring, I am going to say it doesn't seem likely.

When asked if Todd was interested in getting the Marvel Select license, he responded by saying, "The simple answer is yes, as I am sure probably dozens of other companies are".

Todd then went on to say, "I think if I was a betting man, I think what is gonna happen is that sliver (meaning Marvel Select) was always aggravating Hasbro, they didn't want that sliver out there. I would say that it's just a good opportunity for them (meaning Marvel) to just close that door, not give it to anybody, not side shuffle it, just close the door and give more peace of mind to their big giant partner (meaning Hasbro).

So again I can't say for sure about what the future holds for Marvel Select, but from what Todd is saying here, at the very least it does not sound like he is in any serious contention of getting that license or will be able to do any kind of 7" articulated Marvel figures anytime soon.

Todd is probably right that Hasbro didn't like Select. But I also feel like most of the people collecting Legends probably didn't pick up many Select figures outside of a few because of the larger scale. A Select Hulk, Colossus, etc. would scale larger than most legends, and I feel that kind of niche made Select a nice option for collectors, not a necessity as others noted above.

That being said? I wouldn't mind seeing Todd take a stab at it using some of the knowledge he has had from DC Multiverse. It's actually kind of sad because DC Multiverse had reached a point where the figures were starting to peak and come into their own. I'd point to the Reeve Superman (which came with a flight stand, by the way.) Something not even Hasbro would do for a $50 Spider-Man. Not sure if Mattel will stick to 7 or go 6".But if Todd wanted to do a 7" Select line? They could then be paired with some of the McFarlane Multiverse DC Figures. We never had the likes of Tobey Maguire's Spidey crossing over with Keaton's Batman on the big screen. That's something fun with figures that you can do whatever you want. Meanwhile, if Mattel makes a 6" line for DC? They then could be posed with 6" Legends.

I wouldn't be opposed to seeing what Todd could do given the chance, but I do think indeed it's far more likely MS just ceases to exist, because they are not really necessary for 1 and for 2 of course nobody wants a competitor, I just don't think the numbers where there for Selects anyways, I think they mostly served as Sub figures for ML collectors, myself included there, I bought a good bunch of figures soley because Hasbro didn't make em, case in point Watcher, Titanium Man, Crimson Dynamo, Venom the Madness, A much better scale Abomination.

Don't think anyone just collected Selects, although I did in my beginnings of re-collecting marvel figures, I actually used to like them more then the Toybiz era Legends, but obviously that faded.

probably most likely we just won't see Selects anymore at all, but I'd be all for seeing what Toddy or someone else could do with some Marvel IP action.

There's not much I agree with McFarlane and his ego about but I agree with this. I believe MS has been a thorn in MLs side for a long time. I never really considered them competitors. I know some ML collectors that dabbled in some MS but I knew zero people who collected only MS. Seriously I wonder what their target audience was. And while I don't think MS ever directly impacted ML sales I do think it eventually became very clear that they did impact the character selection as to what figures Hasbro decided to let ML do. I'm fairly certain the reasons we don't have the versions of Crimson Dynamo and Titanum Man that we all want and we don't have an updated Annihilus or any Mephisto at all is because MS did them first. I don't think anyone needs to fill this void. Actually I don't even think it's a void. Honestly I'm not even sure what kept MS going this long. But between McF's statues (posed figures is not a thing) and ML i think the bases are more or less covered.

Thanks for highlighting this interview! i thought it was a fascinating look into Todds thinking and he was incredibly open and honest as always! See you in San Diego!

Totally agree with Todd. Hasbro would love for no-one to take the Select licence. We have seen it ourselves that Hasbro are reluctant to do certain figures because Select got there first.

Interesting interview. Todd really has shown a lot of knowledge..

Well, the toddfather is right. It would make sense for hasbro to see DS a nuisance on the marvel license cuz honestly some of their product really does take away a marginal of the product share of the marvel ip so less money for Hasbro even if that share is tiny.

It's business. He goes on to say he doens't blame them and he would do the same thing if the shoes were reversed. No one who is spending a ton of money on a license wants someone else doing a very similar product that is going to compete with them.
