Marvel Studio's latest big-screen installment Captain America: The Winter Soldier easily took the number 1 spot at the domestic box office for its opening weekend with an estimated take of $96.2 million and setting an April record which was previously held by Fast Five back in 2011 with a weekend opening of $86.2 million.
Winter Soldier beat Marvel Studio's previous film weekend opening Thor: The Dark World which brought in $85.7 million its first weekend but failed to surpass the first Iron Man movie which brought in $98.6 million for its opening weekend back in 2008.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier also is doing well overseas where it has already topped the first Captain America's take of $194 million.
Chris Evans will next appear as Captain America in Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron which opens in theaters on May 1, 2015 and a third Captain America movie has already been greenlit by the studio with a May 6, 2016 release date, the same planned release date for Warner Bros. Superman/Batman.
