Deadline reports that Sony is looking to make a female superhero movie for their Spider-Man Cinematic Universe. Sony already is planning on releasing a Sinister Six all-bad guy film on November 11, 2016 and they pushed back the release of Spider-Man 3 till 2018, so this new female based movie would likely fall sometime in 2017.
According to the Deadline article strong candidates for the female based movie include
Silver Sable, Black Cat, Stunner, Firestarter (We think they mean Firestar) and Spider-Woman. For me the big question is which Universe do some of these characters actually belong to.
Silver Sable, Black Cat and
Stunner are clearly Spider-Man based characters, though none of them have that much name recognition outside of hardcore Spider-Man fans.
Firestar is probably best known for her appearance in the old 80's cartoon
Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, but really isn't a Spider-Man based character. She is actually a mutant who was formerly and Avenger and currently serving as a member of the X-Men in Marvel's Amazing X-Men title. So would she fall under the Sony, 20th Century Fox or Marvel's purview?
Spider-Woman is another character that we really aren't clear on which universe she would fall under. Obviously she has Spider in her name similar to Spider-Man, but she has never really had a strong connection with the Spider-Man comics or with Spider-Man himself. In the comics Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman spends most of her time these days in the pages of Avengers. Beyond the occasional guest-appearance and the time both she and Spider-Man served together in the pages of New Avengers (And even then it was actually a Skrull impersonator and not the real Jessica), the two characters have never had much to do with one another.
Deadline says that Lisa Joy Nolan (Westworld) has been hired to write the script for the movie and Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing it. What do you think, which female Marvel Character should Sony try and make into a movie for it's Spider-Man Cinematic Universe?
UPDATE: Forbes writer Mark Hughes has chimed in on Twitter to say Sony will make a
Black Cat movie.
