According to THR, Bassam Tariq has stepped down as director for the upcoming MCU Blade movie which stars Mahershala Ali and is currently slated for a Nov. 3, 2023 release. Here is the statement released by Marvel about why:

“Due to continued shifts in our production schedule, Bassam is no longer moving forward as director of Blade but will remain an executive producer on the film,” Marvel said in a statement to THR. “We appreciate Bassam’s talent and all the work he’s done getting Blade to where it is.”

No word yet on a replacement or how this might impact the production of the movie.

The thing is, by all accounts, the MCU films arent like most huge budget films. Marvel Studios a machine. The studios, crews, VFX its mostly the same whoever the director is. Hell, several directors have said the action scenes were mostly planned out before they were hired. With all of that in place the experience of the director is almost insignificant to how the film is made, so they can afford to bring in someone who might have a fresh viewpoint to give it some style. Or the cynical (but probably equally correct) view is that newer directors, early in their career, will be excited by the opportunity and less prone to fight the studio on the things Marvel doesnt let them control.

What good is a fresh viewpoint it the movie is pretty much already plotted out and the director is unnecessary? Under that layout they could basically hire the guy who changes the urinal cakes in the restrooms as just a figurehead. I've never heard that but under the way Disney is said to run things I'm guessing this is 100 percent accurate.

And that's what I've been hearing all these years, and if the director works, they'll give him more freedom, like Taika...

I know it's Disney's thing to pluck these people out of obscurity and mold them to the "Disney Way", but maybe pick someone with a little more experience for these multi-million dollar, highly anticipated projects.
