All-Out Avengers Drops Readers Right Into The Action Of The Avengers' Most Exhilirating Exploits

Announced yesterday by Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski at Fan Expo Philadelphia, there’s a brand-new Avengers ongoing series coming in September that’s going to launch readers directly into the thrilling missions of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! Strap in for ALL-OUT AVENGERS!

ALL-OUT AVENGERS will be written by award winning novelist Derek Landy, known for his outstanding work in the recent CAPTAIN AMERICA & IRON MAN limited series. Landy will be joined by Greg Land, the superstar artist who over the years has brought some of Marvel’s most memorable battles to life. Together, Landy and Land will throw readers into the middle of some of the Avengers’ most pulse-pounding adventures to date! From page one, panel one, the Avengers will be knee deep in the action with no setup, no explanations, and no time for questions! Beware of whiplash as you discover more with the flip of each explosive page!

The opening issue will star all your favorite A-List Avengers--Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Blade, and Spider-Woman—as they overcome the odds and struggle to diffuse a chaotic situation caused by a deadly new Marvel villainess… They’ll have to perform feats like never before as each breathtaking issue raises the stakes higher and higher for an overarching and truly unpredictable saga.

Here’s what Landy had to say about the upcoming series:

“When Tom Brevoort approached me with this concept, I thought it was an inspired idea, a slice of creative genius, and also totally unworkable...! But the chance to launch a new Avengers title, and the chance to write any character who'd ever BEEN an Avenger, was impossible for this particular Marvel fanboy to resist. Add in the fact that Tom wanted to get Greg Land on art and my fate was pretty much sealed.

“The trick was to work within the confines inherent in the concept, but also to find a way to deliver what everyone would expect: a continuity of ideas and the development of an overarching storyline. I needed to find the hook that drags the reader from issue to issue, and I figured the best way to do that was to put the Avengers in the exact same situation as the reader: they are aware that this is happening, but they don't know why...

Greg Land, Jay Leisten, and Frank D’Armata--it's such a thrill to be working with a team like this, a team responsible for making ALL-OUT AVENGERS the best-looking book you've got coming your way.”

“Having just finished up a nice run on the awesome Symbiote Spider-Man series of books, I wasn't sure what would be next. Getting All-Out sounded like it would be good but I got really excited when I read the synopsis,” Land added. “After reading Derek's script for #1, I knew it was going to be a fun and challenging project. All of the scripts so far have been full of interesting and cool scenes for our changing roster of Avengers. Hitting each issue in the middle of the action is a terrific story vehicle and gets us off running from the start. I hope everyone can see the excitement in the artwork and all-out action( pun intended). Along with my very talented buddies Jay Leisten and Frank D'Armata, we hope to give readers something to enjoy!”

So is Blade not the Sheriff of Vampire Nation anymore? I would like more stories of the Vampire Nation but not in the Avengers.

Alright, they just announced that Landy will indeed have access to any character who has been an Avenger, and the book will have a rotating cast, withCaptain America, Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Blade, and Spider-Woman being the debut line-up.

Now I'm very exicted. I can only hope the art team is also rotating...

Hopefully he will sue the opportunity to focus on the forgotten Avengers and not just rely on the Big Names

I'd love to see Landy use other classic Avengers like those. Aaron's near-monopoly of the Avengers brand really hurt the non-A-listers of the team. All of the characters you mentioned have been benched and collecting dust, with sporadic appearances here and there (at least Clint is going to lead the Thunderbolts again).

Vision especially has been shelved not even WandVision got him anything.

I was hoping that the book would at least get a lot of the forgotten Avengers like Hawkeye, Wanda, Vision, Wonderman and co. a chance to be back in an Avenger bok, but it looks like it is a line-up similiar to Aaron's team

Wouldn't be the first time I put up with Greg Land's "art" for the sake of an artist or character I like. Today it was revealed this book is going to be written by Derek Landy, so this will be one of those instances. I loved Landy's work in Captain America/Iron Man, so I can't wait to see what he does with more heroes. The line-up is shaping up to have Captain America, Spider-Man, She-Hulk, Black Panther and Spider-Woman. That's a pretty standard roster, so I'm gonna be selfish and cross my fingers for Iron Man to appear as well.

In addition to the ComicTropes video posted above, here's a good primer on Land's "artistry" (except for the image in the middle of the guy having a heart attack, that's by Land's fellow tracer Salvador Larroca):

f7b.jpg

Tracing aside, I personally don't find his artwork good. The facial expressions of his characters feel artificial and their poses stilted, it's like he's drawing wax dolls. Many times the expressions don't even fit what the dialogue is going for, which really takes me out of the reading experience.

Of course he's facial expressions and poses are artificial and stilted, he's just photoshopping still photos instead of drawing them. Even his Uncanny X-men collaborator Matt Fraction criticised his work

I've heard about Land copying previously used art, but has he stolen other artist's images? Or has he just reused/traced his own work? It's too bad either way, because he's actually a great artist. His work is beautiful, it's just too bad that he's tainted his reputation with shady practices.

He must be cheap to hire

Yeah, Land is a fast "artist." I guess it's easy to pump out pages when your work was already done by your past self, other artists, cosplayers, adult magazine models, and Google images. I think the clearest and most recent example of this is when Joe Bennett was booted from Timeless #1 at the 11th hour, so his replacement was Greg Land.
