This year, fans can embrace Marvel’s iconic tradition of Corner Boxes with a new line of variant covers by acclaimed, best-selling cover artist Mark Brooks!
Shown to retailers yesterday at ComicsPro, these covers will feature eye-catching and classic-style corner boxes that depict lineups from throughout Avengers and X-Men history, starting with their original Silver Age rosters! On sale just in time for the two title’s milestone 60th anniversaries, see one of the industry’s most celebrated talents honor the Avengers and X-Men’s multitude of incredible characters with glorious headshots. Brooks’ CORNER BOX VARIANT COVERS will run on Jed MacKay and C.F. Villa’s new AVENGERS run and Gerry Duggan and Joshua Cassara’s X-MEN series throughout 2023.
“There are many reasons why I was attracted to comics as a kid and the corner box was a big part of it,” Brooks explained. “I knew what issue number and who I could expect to see in the issue. It was a little preview to tantalize the reader. It was always heads, a full figure, or a micro-scene. No matter what, it enticed me to pick the book up. It’s why I started the #LetMarkCornerbox campaign in earnest on Twitter. It was primarily a joke to express my love for the corner box. It ended up taking on a bit of a life of its own. When C.B. told me that they’d like this to become a reality, I couldn’t pass it up. I’ve penciled well over 100 heads so far. I don’t plan on stopping until Marvel says ‘okay, that’s enough’- LOL!”

Pro: the corner boxes are a great memory and these look like awesome homages.
Cons: F@#$ Marvel and their variants.
Imagine if the X-Men Anniversary and Avengers Anniversary brought us Marvel Legends boxed sets of the characters in this artwork. That would have been a dream. I believe we will eventually get the classic X-Men, but they sure are taking their time.
Corner boxes were awesome. These covers could be fun.

You could quickly see if your favorite characters or lineups were in that issue. The whole team isn't always on the cover, particularly nowadays. It's good when you haven't read a book for a while. You see the head of a favorite and now start reading Avengers or XMen again. Wish they'd bring it back, along with using the legacy numbers. It is so hard to organize my collection now.
You're definitely right with the Legacy Numbering, particularly with X-Men. When the Krakoa era began, the first issue of X-Men (adjectless) had Uncanny X-Men's Legacy Numbering (#645, I believe) which was confusing enough, but then they dropped Legacy Numbering altogether after that issue. Marvel stated back in '17, that going forward, all their books would carry legacy numbers on their cover, both to honor the history of the series, and to avoid confusion about which volume you were reading. They now just seem to be picking and choosing which books get the numbering, and which ones don't. Very disorganized.
Oooooo....the nostalgia of it all!!!
