Package Description
Dread ruler of an other-worldly dimension, Mephisto has spent eons as the dark lord of the damned. Drawing his immense power from the innocent souls he twists into his own demonic image, Mephisto’s ranks swell with those he has bargained with and betrayed. Offering them power or material wealth, he entices the weak-hearted into his realm where they are tricked into an eternity of servitude, condemned for all time. A being of supreme power and darkness, Mephisto always keeps his word…but a demon is still, after all, a demon.
Appearance
Mephisto comes in his classic tight red clothing, loin cloth and cape. There's a lot of black washing to add texture and character to the figure, since it's mostly fields of red. However there may have been a little too much washing, as it seems like the black makes a whole other color scheme instead of highlighting the red. The joints though are some of the least noticeable on any figure. Virtually all of the points of articulation are hidden or blend in perfectly with the black wash. Only the knees really seem to stand out at all, and that's minor.
The sculpt itself is excellent in detail and proportion. There's a lot of sculpting of the muscles and the clothing tightening on his body, which doesn't seem as unrealistic on a demon as other figures. The cape is also made of a softer plastic to fit more naturally on his body. My only problems are with the head and hands. His face seems fairly pointed, which can work to your advantage actually if you pose him right. The other problem is that his hands are kind of in an odd pose. The hands are sculpted to look good holding on to his arm rest, but it is kind of interesting to find a way to pose him with his hands.
Then when you consider the chair that comes with this figure, Mephisto blows most other figures out of the water. The chair is intricately designed to be the throne of pure evil. It's also very large to contribute to Mephisto's presence of power. Overall, it's one of the best accessories made, and helps make Mephisto one of the best Marvel Select figures out there.
Articulation
As on most Marvel Select figures, articulation is limited more than Marvel Legends for the sake of the sculpt. The top half of the arms and legs are a single piece, as is the torso. The elbows and knees are a single pin joint. There is no cut for the boots to rotate, but the hands rotate. The feet go up and down and side to side, but do not rotate in relation to the leg. The cape and loin cloth are a soft plastic that can be moved, and the chair is one solid piece.
Poseablility
It can be hard to get Mephisto in really dynamic poses, but that's not what this figure is all about. Mephisto looks good along side Marvel Select and Marvel Legends figures, and fits really well in his throne. It can be hard to pose him right in the throne though, particularly the arms. Mine had very stiff shoulders when I bought him, and I had to loosen him up to get his arms anywhere close to both arm rests. But once Mephisto is properly posed he looks fantastic standing with other Marvel figures.
Final Judgment: 7
There are two things keeping this score from being even higher. The first is he doesn't have as much articulation as Legends figures, and the second is that he's not one of my favorite characters. This is an excellent action figure though, by most people's standards I would think. Think of this score as his minimum really, because there's not a whole lot that this figure can be criticized for.
