Package Description
Little is known about Colossus. He rarely speaks, though whether his stoicism is a result of shyness or a taciturn nature is unknown. Even when not in his metal form, he gives the impression of great strength. His eyes betray a keen intelligence that is otherwise hidden behind his silent nature. Since he arrived at the mansion, he has had only one goal – to become one of the X-Men. He’s taken every opportunity to train with the team, and has displayed a fighting talent and unbeatable spirit that are an asset to the team.
Appearance
Colossus has a new, very tall and wide sculpt. The packaging says he is 7’5”, which is the correct height for the figure, although I’m not sure if that’s the height of the actor from the movie. The impression of the figure is he’s a very tall and strong man, and he has a sleek and stoic appearance that fits the character well. Stylistically Colossus fits in well with Hasbro and Toybiz figures, because he’s got a textured appearance from the silver arms without being too stylistically different from Hasbro figures. The shiny silver finish of the running change helps the appearance of the figure, because this costume needs some colors that are not flat. It is also more movie accurate.
All the lines showing the contours of his muscles are sculpted in, although they are not as noticeable in the movie as they are on this figure. There are also some problems with the body sculpt. The arms hang out far to the side because of the muscles, and the biceps are prevented from rotating by the muscles to hide the distance. Colossus’s thighs are also huge and disproportionately large. Because of this, the knee joint and pins are also large and very noticeable. From the front the thighs don’t look bad, but from the side and an angle the thighs look large and unnatural, even for a super hero.
The paint application of the silver is a lot better than I expected. There are little problems except for what looks like scratches on the face. The grey paint lines are also very clean, and add some needed color to the large black areas. None of the joints are overly noticeable, with the bright silver or dark black mostly hiding problem areas. Overall, I’m happy with the look of the figure, and the only thing that really bothers me is how far out to the side his arms hang. Colossus should go well into a movie display, although the relatively plain black costume sets him apart from regular ML figures.
Articulation
Colossus has double jointed knees, elbows, ball jointed wrists, and articulated fingers on his right hand. All the joints get their full range of motion except that the arms cannot sit by his side, and the head cannot look up or down very far. In addition, Colossus has no ankle articulation whatsoever, although he does have a toe joint.
Poseablility
Colossus is a well done figure, and has a good paint job. The lack of ankle articulation and head movement can make it hard to do dynamic poses and balance him, but it’s possible to make him look good. He’ll go great into a movie display, but I wouldn’t consider Colossus to be a versatile figure. Also, he doesn’t look very good with the colorful costumes of the 616 universe, which means he may be useless to some collectors.
Final Judgment: 6
There’s nothing terribly wrong with Colossus, but its hard to incorporate him into an existing collection without other movie figures. Despite his articulation problems though, he’s got some good poses he can do. The paint job is also very clean, and I love the shiny silver used on the running change and all the sculpted in muscle lines. Colossus gets a score of “good” because he’s got a good sculpt and paint job, but has a few articulation and body shape problems that keep the score down. It would also be nice if he could fit into a 616 collection, although that’s not the fault of the figure but of the costume design. There are some nice aspects to Colossus’s design, but nothing terribly exciting to warrant a high score.
