Package Description
This mighty suit of armor is as ruthless as it is powerful, willing to destroy the entire city, just to take out IRON MAN. It was built from the design documents for the original IRON MAN armor. It bristles with weapons, and is strong enough to smash boulders into dust.
Appearance
Iron Monger has a new sculpt that looks movie accurate from the images we’ve seen. There’s lots of details in terms of panel lines and various shapes, but the figure probably would have benefited from some more metallic colors or some outlining of the panel lines. Despite the details that are on the figure, Iron Monger has a very flat look because of the large grey areas. At least some black on the gun on his arm would have been nice. The proportions are good and the figure captures the character well, but the lack of colors make the figure look much simpler than it is. Obviously, this figure will not pass for comic accurate in the slightest, but he looks good with movie figure.
Iron Monger doesn’t have as much a look and feel of a suit of armor as Iron Man does. He has a bit of a hard solid plastic look that I’m not fond of. None of the joints are obvious at all, and most don’t even look like joints. He looks fine with Marvel Legends figures as long as you aren’t concerned about comic accuracy, and goes with other Iron Man movie figures very well. Overall Iron Monger looks good, but I think the texture could be vastly improved with some carefully selected paint.
Articulation
Iron Monger has a pin jointed head that only moves left to right, and pin jointed knees and elbows which each bend about 90 degrees. He has bicep swivels and a waist swivel. The wrists are ball jointed. The shoulders click into position when posing because of the action feature, as does the waist. The left leg moves at the waist like a “V” crotch, while the right leg doesn’t move at all at the waist. Overall, the range of motion of the joints he does have is good.
Poseability
Iron Monger has a few decent action poses. His biggest problem is the lack of articulation at the waist in the right leg. It is difficult to make him fight Iron Man though. He looks good on the shelf with movie figures or comic figures, although I don’t really want to display him with my comic figures. The action features in the arms and waist haven’t really been a problem for me like the leg. Overall his biggest problem is articulation.
Final Judgment: 6
The action features didn’t take as much away as I though they would, but if you’re patient the Iron Monger with opening cockpit will probably be better than this version. He’s a decent action figure, but just doesn’t generate the excitement that the Iron Man Mark 03 does in this line.
