Review: Hot Toys Iron Man Mark III – (Battle Damaged Version) 1/6 Scale Figure

Jay Cochran - March 25, 2010
I have never been much of a 12” figure collector but after getting my hands on Hot Toys’ new 1/6 scale Iron Man Mark III (Battle Damaged) figure from their Movie Masterpiece Series line, I may have to reconsider.

Hot Toys has spared no expense with the amount of detail this figure has. Starting with the packaging, you get a figure that is well secured in the box which opens up to display both the figure and all of its accessories. Getting the figure out of the packaging is fairly simple with none of the twisty ties that usually make opening a figure a chore.

When you get the figure out and in your hands, you quickly realize the quality that has gone into it. Even though it’s labeled a “battle damaged” figure, the beauty of the paint apps is quite apparent. Even the scratches look good.

The figure is packed with a ton of accessories and features. You get a non-damaged helmet with eyes that light up when attached to the figure. A battle-damaged head that comes with a removable faceplate reveals the face of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. The resemblance to Downey Jr. is remarkable and has some nice added details of bruises and blood on the face which one might expect after getting tossed around by Iron Monger. The head was sculpted by Kojun.

The faceplate can be removed completely on this version of the head, or you can attach it to the top of the helmet. This feature uses a magnet which is a little touchy and the faceplate does have a tendency to fall off if you move the figure around a lot, but it works fine for display purposes.

The figure also comes with two different removable chest plates, one beat up and looking like the armor plate at the end of the first Iron Man movie. The second plate is non-damaged.

The interchangeable heads and chest plates essentially allow you to have two figures in one. One non-battle damaged (or at least fairly non-battle damaged) version and the battle-damaged one.

On top of that, you get seven different sets of hands: two fists, four different open pair of hands allowing you to pose the figure as if it’s about to fire its repulsor rays and one hand without any armor on, again to give the figure the appearance as it looked at the end of the first Iron Man movie.

Finally, the figure comes with a stand that resembles the top of the arc reactor where Iron Man & Iron Monger battled it out in the first movie. The stand allows you to pose the figure in standing or flying positions.

Besides the accessories, the figure features quite a few different features. As I mentioned before, the figure has light-up eyes, micro ARC reactor on the chest and repulsor palms on both hands. Each light has its own switch, so you don’t have to use the lights at the same time; each light also is powered by its own watch type battery.

The figure comes with two shoulder rocket launchers that will pop up from inside of the figure, working forearm rockets, a re-engineered airbrake deployment system, fully deployed Air Flaps at the back of the armor with built-in metal flaps, retractable countermeasure dispensers at the waist and expendable wrist gauntlet that will act like a shield.

The figure is well articulated with over 36 points to allow you to pose it in a wide variety of poses, and the paint apps done by JC Hong are incredible looking with a metal-like finish. There are parts of the figure and armor pieces that appear and even feel fragile, some parts will even pop off, but they easily pop right back on and I have had no problems with the figure after hours of posing. The joints remained tight and nothing has broken.

Whether you have been collecting the previously released Hot Toys Iron Man figures or this will be your first, I don’t think you will be disappointed with this one and will want to add it to your collection. Look for this figure to be released in late March or early April.
