The world of plastic men shall know fear, and its name is GALACTUS! Hasbro has released the first figure in a new Marvel Masterworks sub-series under the 3.75” scale Marvel Universe line. Standing 19” tall, this devourer of worlds is quite an impressive toy.
When I first heard about this figure, my initial thought was “What do I need with another Galactus figure?” I already had the Marvel Legends “Build-A-Figure” Galactus figure released by Toy Biz several years ago, and I wasn’t really feeling a need or desire to plop down $50 (the retail price for this new figure) for another one. Until I actually got the new one from Hasbro in my hands.
The Marvel Legends version was a good figure, possibly the best “Build-A-Figure” in the line. Compared to this new Galactus? Well, let’s just say there’s no real comparison. First, this new figure is significantly taller and it has articulation which you can use without worrying about parts falling off. The new figure features neck, wrist, and ankle joints along with double jointed knees and ball-jointed shoulders. The one main place missing articulation is the chest due to electronics allowing the figure to talk and light-up. The figure also lacks finger joints like most Hasbro Marvel-based figures; these might have been nice. It is impossible for the figure to be posed in a seated position due to the constraints of the rubber-type skirt it has on.
The size of Galactus is really impressive, especially when you put it with the smaller 3.75” figures. This is really a case where the smaller scale figures just look so much better with the giant figure than the 6” ones.
Another area where I think this figure shines is with the sculpting detailing, especially in the area of the head and face. This figure just seems more menacing, and the sculptors really nailed the look of Galactus in the face. Galactus also has electronic lights and sound features. When you push a button on his chest, his head and eyes light up and he will say one of 11 different phrases. The voice sounds pretty menacing and is a nice feature for the toy.
- “You serve me now!”
- “Who is so ignorant as to confront Galactus?”
- “You will witness the end... as I am power incarnate!” Ends with a power blast and explosion sound effect.
- “Behold the world eating machine!”
- “I Hunger.”
- “Know me mortal…know me and know fear!”
- “So speaks Galactus!”
- “Who dares defy Galactus?”
-“I am the devourer of worlds!”
- “Tremble at the might of the Power Cosmic!” Ends with a power blast and explosion sound effect.
- “To me, my Herald!”
As for other things of note about the figure, it comes in packaging with artwork by Marvel’s own Joe Quesada. The box the figure comes in has a flap on the front that opens to reveal a window displaying the complete figure. This is nice if you are not planning to open the figure but wish to still display it. The back of the packaging also has a cool diorama featuring a bunch of Marvel Universe 3.75” figures attacking Galactus along with a bio about the character explaining who he is.
For accessories, Galactus comes with a 3.75” Silver Surfer figure (the Herald of Galactus). This is a nice add-on if you didn’t already buy the single carded version of the figure which is basically the same figure, only with some different paint highlights. I think it would have been nice if they changed up this figure a bit more (making it with vac-metal or something). The figure also comes with the standard “Top Secret” Hammer Files envelope that accompanies all Marvel Universe figures, although the envelope and the contents inside are bigger than what normally comes with the 3.75” figures. The file card inside the envelope also features art by Joe Quesada and includes instructions to replace the 3 AAA batteries provided for the lights and sounds.
All around, this is a solid toy that will go great in the collections of 3.75” or 6” figure collectors, and it’s durable enough that it will also be a great toy for kids to play with. I’ve been playing with it, posing it, and even dropped it a couple times, and the joints still feel nice and tight.
