Review: Hot Toys – MMS120 - Iron Man 2: 1/6th scale War Machine Collectible Figure

The new 1/6 scale Movie Masterpiece Series 120 War Machine figure from Hot Toys is just that, a masterpiece.

This figure has it all: durable, articulated, precise detailing and cool features. You might expect a high-end figure to be delicate and easy to break, but it poses and plays with the feel of a 6” figure rather than a 12” one. The figure has over 36 points of articulation, and the joints are tight and sturdy. The figure has ball-jointed elbows that pop off and on easily and interchangeable head and hands, some of which have articulated fingers.

War Machine, like the previous Iron Man figures, comes with a number of light-up features: the repulsors on the figure’s hands (blue), the eyes on the helmet without the removable faceplate (red) and the chest arc piece (blue). Each light is controlled by a separate switch allowing you to turn on the lights in any combination.

The figure also comes with a ton of weapons – which one would expect from a War Machine. He has the shoulder-mounted Gatling gun that rotates in all directions and can be mounted on either shoulder, a pop-up rocket launcher on his left shoulder, and a pop-up launcher on his right shoulder for the “Ex-Wife” which was the not-so-impressive piece of Hammer-Tech seen in the Iron Man 2 movie. The “Ex-Wife” missile does come out of the launcher, but not easily. You probably want a pair of tweezers handy if you put it in the launcher and wish to take it back out at some point.

The figure also has two machine guns that snap onto the bottom of the figure’s arms. These look dead-on to the movie and even flip down for when they are in use. However, they do fall off the figure somewhat easily, especially if you flip them down. The figure also has articulated flaps on the armor behind each leg to give it the appearance that it’s about to jet off into the sky.

As I mentioned above, the figure has interchangeable heads including one with a removable faceplate revealing the face of James Rhodes. The likeness of actor Don Cheadle who played the War Machine character in Iron Man 2 is quite accurate. Kojun and J.C. Hong did a stunning job when sculpting and painting the head. The faceplate itself, similar to previous Iron Man figures from Hot Toys, is held on magnetically allowing you to cover the face or have it rest on top of the figure’s head.

If you enjoyed the previous Iron Man offerings from Hot Toys, then I have no doubt you will love this one as well. If you have never purchased or held one of these Iron Man figures in your hands, then I think War Machine would be a great place to start.
