Its just the best way to have a light-up feature without using electronics. With proper lighting, he really looks ablaze. Its basically light-piping (as used on some Transformers eyes, etc.) but for the whole figure. And for that, I personally love that effect.
As for Iceman, wasnt there a time in the comics where he really did become solid ice?
Yeah sure like I said, I get what they are doing, and I'm certainly glad it works for people, I know it's not an easy task to potray a character who is on fire, or ice based without using translucency without electronics, I know, and if it's working for the majority then great, sure it doesn't generally look awful, it's trying its best, but it's just a gripe I have.
TBH I would imagine that at one point during Ice Man's long storied career, he became solid ice... I can't confirm but it would track.

I had faith one day it would end, they started sorta going in a better direction by the time the Walgreens torch came out, sure it was technically mostly see through, but I got the effect, at least it wasn't glass like, the retro figure tried to be a bit more see through but still managed a bit of solidness that made some sense....But no stop, Ice Man and Human Torch should be solid, sure make them clear and then put a wash over it, so you can have the effects, but depict the character as a actual solid entity.
just sayiinng.
