Among the greatest challenges ever faced by the FANTASTIC FOUR, the SILVER SURFER looms largest. Taken from his home world Zenn-La, his mind was erased by GALACTUS and his body infused with the “Power Cosmic,” elemental energies on which the universe turns. He is one of the most powerful beings in existence. Despite his long service to GALACTUS, he overcame his brainwashing and found himself remembering a world full of life, and love. His memories in their power gave him the strength to defy mighty GALACTUS himself, and turned the SILVER SURFER from a galactic threat into one of the greatest heroes the universe has ever known.
Appearance
A lot of people will be happy with this figure because of the absence of blue washing. He still suffers from a lot of the same pitfalls of the first ML Silver Surfer though. The balls of the shoulder are large and unnatural looking, and also a prime spot for paint to wear off. Just like with Toybiz figures, you need to try and find a figure without a lot of paint problems on it. I was lucky and got one when they just stocked the figure at Wal-Mart, so I went through the pile looking for a good one. The packaging tended to bend the arms to the side too, so look out for that as well when shopping for Silver Surfer.
The whole figure is painted silver, which is an odd exception to Hasbro's treatment of Marvel Legends so far. The head is still the pop culture grey alien though, which is not comic accurate and a little out of place among other figures. Generally though he looks pretty good on display with other figures, as you can see from the last picture of the review. He may be a little short, but he's generally well proportioned and it looks good. The only glaringly obvious joints are the shoulders. On the whole though, he's a good figure and looks nice on display, but may end up being a place holder for the Silver Surfer that will be coming with the 6" Fantastic Four BAF wave.
Articulation
Surfer has the same body mold as several figures in the Marvel Legends Line. His body is the same as SMC/Urban Legends Daredevil, Deadpool, XMC Ice-man, and of course ML Silver Surfer. He's got a swivel and pivot waist, ball jointed shoulders and hips, cuts in the forearms and shins, and double jointed elbows and knees. There's no accessories except the board he stands on, so he can get his full range of motion. The shoulder joints are a little odd because of the way they twist, but it just involves a little different movement to get the same range of motion.
Poseablility
This Surfer can stand much easier than the ML version because of the lack of magnets in his feet. He can also hold his board fairly well for those who don't want to string him up in the air. For those that have the magnetic board, Surfer balances fairly well on the stand as long as the board isn't positioned at an odd angle. In the last picture where he is on the board Surfer is simply balancing on the board. Hasbro changed this Surfer's board to be solid plastic with pegs in it. The pegs look out of place and are too wide apart. The peg holes in Surfer's feet though are the same size as the holes for the magnets in the first Surfer. So if you've got a magnetic board from the first Surfer, you've got the option of buying some magnets and sticking them in his feet and putting him on the board from Toybiz. This is a good option if the magnets are worth the money, because the only other way Surfer is going to fly is if you have the patience to string him up in the air.
Final Judgment: 5
The Surfer looks good, but I think a lot of that is just because he's shiny. The body sculpt isn't the best out there but it still blends in pretty well. Unfortunately it may be hard to pose him if you don't have the Toybiz Surfer, which has to bring down the score. Overall he's a good figure, but I can't help but feel a little gypped about the no magnets thing. So it may be hard to swallow but I'm giving Surfer a 5 for several reasons. He only gets a 5 because of the lack of magnets, the alien face, the lack of a stand, and the paint problems. For me, he's probably just a place holder until the new Silver Surfer comes out in the FF BAF wave.
