Iconic comic book artist John Romita Sr passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, June 12th. He was 93. Romita Sr. was known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man and for co-creating such characters as Mary Jane Watson, Wolverine, and The Punisher.
His son, John announced his death on Instagram and wrote the following, "I say this with a heavy heart, My father, John Romita passed away peacefully in his sleep this Monday morning. He is a legend in the art world and it would be my honor to follow in his footsteps. Please keep your thoughts and condolences here out of respect for my family. He was the greatest man I ever met."
Another Legend lost. Rest in Peace
When I picture comic book Spider-Man, I'm picturing Romita Sr. art. His work was, in a word, iconic.
Yup, cheers to this man. One of the greatest of all time.
This man's work was that of a true master craftsman. His massive talent basically set the tentpole for the Marvel Age and helped rocket Marvel Comics to the top comics publication in the nation. Anything he touched was gold. His work on Captain America & the Falcon was second to none. He remains THE benchmark for Spider-Man, right up there with Ditko (sorry but I liked him over Ditko). There would be no Punisher, Luke Cage or Wolverine without John Romita. He designed the iconic costumes for the Falcon and the Black Widow. He's in the pantheon of Great Marvel Artists that made Marvel the legend that it is. I encourage anyone who is new to the comics world to go out and buy some books with his work. Treat yourselves to a legend.
I salute you, sir.
