Marvel's Iron Fist Netflix TV Series Season 1 Non-Spoiler Review

The early reviews for Iron Fist were not looking good, and I have never been a huge fan of the character in the comics. I always found him to be a bit on the boring side. I remember first reading about Iron Fist as a kid in the pages of Namor, and while not terrible, I wasn't terribly enamored with the character either. So I went into this with pretty low expectations.

Out of all the Marvel Netflix series, Daredevil remains my favorite but for the most part I also enjoyed Jessica Jones and Cage. Honestly after watching the entire season in one day, I can say the same about Iron Fist. While not the best Marvel series out there, it was enjoyable.

Iron Fist tells the story of Danny Rand (Finn Jones), who disappeared with his billionaire parents at age 10 in a plane crash over the Himalayan mountains where they were presumed dead. Fifteen years later, Danny returns to New York City to pick up the pieces of his life after having been taken in and raised by a mystical group of monks from the land of K'un-Lun, a place that only appears on Earth every 15 years. While Danny was with the monks, he was trained to be a great martial artist and was also bestowed the gift of the Iron Fist, a mystical ability to focus his chi into a powerful weapon that causes his hand to glow yellow and become virtually indestructible.

The series does start out a bit slow and the overall outcome is pretty predictable, however I did enjoy many of the fight scenes throughout the series and found the involvement of The Hand who were last seen in Daredevil to be intriguing. I also liked the introduction of the character Collene Wing (Jessica Henwick), a talented martial artist in her own right with a mysterious past. I don't know much about Collene from the comics, but I thought the way the character was portrayed here was compelling and helped keep the story going. It was also nice to see Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) who has been the common element between all of these Netflix series return. Not only does she continue to prove to be a interesting character, she will also likely be the one to bring all these characters together in the next series.

I won't lie, what I am really waiting for is to see Daredevil, Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones all come together in The Defenders series set to debut later this year on Netflix, but if you liked Cage and Jessica Jones on their own, you will also like Iron Fist. If you haven't already, be sure to check it out on Netflix now.
