The Return Of Marvel Legends In 2012 - What We Know So Far

by Jay Cochran
October 20, 2011
Between the San Diego and New York Comic Cons this year there has been a fair amount of information and images released for Hasbro's big relaunch of the Marvel Legends line for 2012. For those who haven't been able to follow it all we thought we would compile it all in one place for your convenience.

Here is what we know so far.

The first Marvel Legends figure to be released in this new relaunched line was technically the 2011 SDCC exclusive Heroic Age Thor figure. It was released in special MJOLNIR shaped package and featured the character with a paint deco that makes him look as if he is about to wield the power of lightening. This figure retailed for $24.99.

The first wave of Marvel Legends figures in 2012 will be released at general retail. They should be out sometime in January 2012 and have a suggested retail price of $14.99 each. It should be noted that the suggested retail price does not mean that retailers will sell the figures for that price. The actual price is set by the individual retailer and Hasbro has no control over what those prices will be.

All the wave 1 figures except for Thor will come with "Build-A-Figure" piece to make a Terrax figure. Here is how the wave breaks down along with which Terrax piece comes with which figure:

01- Commander Steve Rogers (Lower Torso)

02- X-Men's Hope Summers (Head & Axe)

03- Extremis Iron Man (Right Leg)

04- Marvel's Klaw (Left Leg)

05- Constrictor (Upper Torso)

06- Dan Ketch Modern Ghost Rider (Left & Right Arms)

07- Modern Thor (None/Possible pack-in like a flight stand)

Terrax (Build-A-Figure)

It was said at the San Diego Comic Convention that the Commander Rogers figure would have a variant with an electro-shield, Iron Man would have stealth version released and Ghost Rider would see a version with yellow flames. The Thor figure in this wave is the same sculpt as the SDCC exclusive version, minus the lightening effect deco.

The new Marvel Legends packaging features art work by artist Ed McGuinnes.

The information we have for the second wave of Marvel Legends is not as complete as what we have for the first, but here is what we know so far. Like with wave 1, this wave will be released at general retail, though no release date has yet to be announced. While we know which figures will be included in this wave, we don't know their numbered order or how the "Build-A-Figure" pieces break-down for each figure. We do know this wave will include a number of regular variants and "alternate figure variants,*" including the Build-A-Figure itself.

*"Alternate Figure Variants" is the name we have come up with that describes the figures that will have running changes to them that actually involves a totally different character being released. So for instance Wrecking Crew member Thunderball will be released initially in the line and then at a later date replaced with Wrecking Crew member Piledriver as the variant. These "Alternate Figure Variants" will also come with variant "Build-A-Figure" pieces allowing you two build two different figures once you have all the parts. In the case of wave 2 you will be able to make a Arin Zola figure with the regular figure parts and a variant Red Skull Zola figure with the alternate pieces.

Wave 2 will include the following figures:

Bucky Captain America

Guardians Of The Galaxy Drax The Destroyer

Famtomex

Daken and Big Time Spider-Man are considered just regular variants and will not have variant "Build-A-Figure" pieces.

"Big Time" Spider-Man/Future Foundation Spider-Man

Dark Avenger Wolverine (Daken) with mask on/With mask off

The Wrecking Crew members and the Madame figures are alternate figure variants and include the variant Build-A-Figure parts.

Wrecking Crew Thunderball/Piledriver

Madame Mask/Madame Hydra

Build-A-Figure Arin Zola/Red Skull Zola

We've only been given a sneak-peek at some of the figures in WAVE 3, so we don't know the entire line-up or what the Build-A-Figure wil be for it. We do know the wave will include the following:

USAgent

Punisher (based on Jim Lee art from Punisher Armory)

Blade (Modern)

Moonstar

We also had a few other figures for 2012 revealed at the New York Comic Con, but at this time we don't know what waves they will be assigned to.

Archangel

Jim Lee inspired Jean Grey

Stryfe

We were also told a new sculpted Emma Frost figure would be released sometime down the road and we were shown this image of what the 2007 version was supposed to look like.

So that is what we know so far about Hasbro's plans for Marvel Legends in 2012. The next big opportunity for Hasbro to reveal more information and images for this line won't be until Toy Fair, which takes place in February 2012. Of course by then the first wave of figures should be out on shelves and we can always hope Hasbro might decide to reveal more info on waves 2 and 3 before then. If they do you can be sure we will be covering it for you right here on Marvelous News.
