Many fans were overjoyed when Sony agreed to let Spider-Man join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and even more so when he made his debut last year during Captain America: Civil War.
Spider-Man who is now played by actor Tom Holland will be making his solo movie debut with Sony later this year in
Spider-Man: Homecoming, well semi-solo debut since Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man will also be joining him. After that we can expect to see Spider-Man appear in
Avengers: Infinity War, followed by a
Homecoming sequel. The sequel, which is slated for 2019, was confirmed this week at CinemaCon by Producer Amy Pascal.
What happens to Spidey and the Disney/Marvel/Sony partnership after that remains to be seen. An off-hand comment by Pascal during an event at CinemaCon, where she stated the wall-crawler's future remains uncertain after the sequel sparked more than one click-bait article insinuating that Sony planned to take their proverbial Spider-Man ball and go home.
Forbes however in a recent article states that conclusion is false. They state that Pascal was simply stating that nothing else had been confirmed beyond the newly announced sequel at this time. Forbes then goes on to make the argument that with all parties involved set to make lots of money on the upcoming announced films, it would be crazy for Sony not to continue the deal. Makes sense to us, however only time will tell.
For now fans have at least 3 more years of enjoying Spidey in the MCU and the likelihood of that expanding to even more movies seems pretty high. Now if only someone could work out a similar deal between 20th Century Fox and Marvel for the X-Men, we would be all set.
