Oh, I'm well aware of the Sax Rohmer influence and how that couldn't be adapted. Nor did I have any notions (or desire) to see them insert Fu Manchu into the story. But they should've used Shang's supporting cast of Leiko Wu, Reston and Black Jack Tarr. Those were all Marvel creations. The espionage/martial arts theme of Shang-Chi was what made him what he was, but clearly this movie isn't having any of that. So I lament that this bears little to no resemblance to the source material its supposed to come from. Similar to Agents of SHIELD, havinglittle to do with the actual SHIELD comics.
Sigh.
But, it sounds interesting and I'm glad because I plan to see it.

The figures didn't do jack for me (except for Iron Man) mainly because they have such limited articulation for martial arts action figures, but more because they look nothing like the comic. At least the studio tried to get something kinda-sorta like Shang Chi's current look, unlike the Eternals, where they blew past any attempt at recognition. Nevertheless I hoped the movie at least did well and from this account and other similar reviews, it looks like Shang-Chi is gonna do well!!
I LOVE the 1970s Master of Kung Fu series, but there was no way the movie was going to be able to adapt or even represent those early stories. All of Shang-Chi's original supporting cast were from the Sax Rohmer Fu Manchu novels which Marvel no longer has a licensing agreement with. And they stories also aren't very racially sensitive. This is why the character dropped off the map for almost a quarter of a century and Shang-Chi has only started to reappear in Marvel Comics in the last couple years--because they essentially had to wipe his slate clean and start fresh. That's what the movie had to do, too, and considering that challenge... I think they did a really good job. The whole dynamic between Shang-Chi, Xialing, and Wenwu is really engaging and complex. The Marvel movies haven't always done well with their villains, but Wenwu is pretty good, maybe Top 5.
Also, yeah, I admit Shang-Chi's "hero" costume really doesn't do much for me, but he wears it for a specific purpose in this movie so maybe they can have his costume change the next time we see him.

I just saw the movie and it's really, really good. The cast is terrific andthe story is unexpectedly heartfelt. The action ranges from fun, entertaining small-level martial arts, to wild, Marvel-style CGI spectacle (which is, I think, the weakest part, not because the effects are bad but I just think the third act gets kind of distracted). There's lots of typical Marvel humor, which either works for you or it doesn't. I thought Awkwafina might get annoying, but I was pleasantly surprised that she never got on my nerves.
There were a few misfires, naturally. The movie has too many flashbacks and quick cuts to Shang-Chi's childhood to hit you over the head with the emotional beat, like, yeah we get it, family is complicated, move on. There's also a part 90 minutes in when the movie unexpectedly turns into Jurassic Park for a few minutes, which was just... odd. And the Abomination cameo was more head-scratching than clever; maybe they just wanted to remind us that he's there for if they want to use him later on (like in a Dark Avengers/Thunderbolts project, perhaps).
Overall though, the movie was really enjoyable. It doesn't look or feel like a typical Marvel Cinematic Universe movie until the third act, and even then it's visually different enough to be distinct. I think the movie will surprise people.
I also firmly believe that if the Marvel Legends figures came out this month instead of back in June they'd be selling a lot more.
Looks decent enough. Hopefully we will all enjoy.
Well....I guess theyre doing less spyflick more Iron Fist fantasy....hope its good
Man...I hope this is enjoyable
