Package Description
All the power of the IRON MONGER is focused on the destruction of IRON MAN. As the two mighty, armored figures struggle, the pavement cracks around them, building shudder, and glass for miles around shatters from the shockwaves of their blows.
Appearance
Iron Monger’s sculpt is basically the same as the previous version with a few tweaks. The action features were replaced with the moving panels to reveal Obadiah Stane, but the size and features of the figure are the same. Stane has a decent likeness, although a grimacing facial expression would have been nice. The biggest problem is that Stane is too small for a 6” scaled figure, which shows how undersized Iron Monger is compared to Iron Man. Stane looking down from his cockpit is unique to this figure, and sets him apart in a good way on the display shelf. The overall look of the armor is enhanced by the moving panels. When the cockpit is open, there are so many panels and pieces on the figure that it looks more realistic than if the figure were very smooth.
The overall appearance of this Iron Monger is nicer because of the lighter color and paint wash. The lighter color makes it easier to see all the details in the sculpt, while the paint wash prevents large areas of unbroken gray. I like the blue encircling white on his chest. With the clear plastic of the other version, seeing the grey plastic underneath didn’t look good. The lighter color also seems a little more natural on the figure, even though the armor was dark in the movie. Overall, this is the Iron Monger I was hoping would come out of this movie. At this point, my only real complaint is the size. This is assuming though that if Stane was bigger Hasbro would add more detail. This Iron Monger captures the look and feel of Iron Monger better than the first version.
Articulation
Iron Monger has mostly the same articulation as the previous version. The head does not have any articulation. The elbows, knees and ankles are single pin joints. There are cuts in the biceps and a swivel waist. The shoulders and waist are ball joints. The elbows and knees bend about 90 degrees. There is a great range of motion in the waist. His balance is good, probably from the large feet.
Poseability
Iron Monger looks good with other movie figures. His style fits in adequately with marvel legends that have a more realistic look, but he can have some problems with figures more comic styled. Iron Monger can do some good dynamic poses with the articulation he was given. Overall he can do about what you’d expect just from looking at him.
Final Judgment: 6
A comic version of Iron Monger would be nice, but this is still a good figure. The articulation is better than the previous version, and it also looks nicer. This is the best movie version I expect, and it’s a pretty good figure. The look and feel of Iron Monger are captured quite well with this figure. However, I don’t think there’s anything that qualifies him as “exceptional” so the score is a 6, albeit a high 6.
