Package Description: A
“It wasn’t until his uncle, the villain known as the BLACK KNIGHT, lay dying in his arms that Dane Whitman learned he was descended from a line of warriors dating back to the court of King Arthur. Taking up the mantle of BLACK KNIGHT, Dane resolved to restore the honor of the family name. Over the years, he has battled evil witches and wizards across time and through the arcane dimensions. He has struggled with the curse laid on his ancestor’s sword, but always he has won out over powerful and ancient magic. Though he can be grim and pragmatically bloody-minded at times, no hero displays more determination in the face of opposition.”
Appearance: A
If not for the bland paint job, this figure would have received higher scores from me. The paint job is not sloppy at all; the source of my complaint is the selection of the colors. This figure arrived in the mail, so I haven’t had the chance to compare this Black Knight’s paint job with other Black Knights, but the paint application appeared neat and clean. The gold was applied carefully on the helmet and shield. The red trim was on the right areas of the shoulder pads, body armor, gloves, boots, and shield. Now I know the colors are correct, but I’ve seen customizers make plastic look like real armor, and if this figure is supposed to be an armored knight, he should have been painted to appear like one. Instead he looks like a plastic warrior, but a great looking one!
The Black Knight is an all new sculpt figure. Not a Hasbro repaint, unfortunately, but this new figure was a pleasant surprise. He’s got a non removable helmet, too bad, giant shoulder armor, upper body armor with a raised family crest/symbol, detailed mid torso, layered foot armor plating, shield, sword, and a belt/tunic that has a loop you can use to hold the sword.
Black Knight is just the right height and looks great posed with other members of the Avengers from the previous Toybiz line. I’m not a Black Knight expert, but he looks comic accurate, although I believe this version is depicted with a cape in some images. The joints are obviously Hasbro style, but surprisingly, read on and you’ll see how well they work for this figure.
Articulation: B+
We all know how much the Hasbro joint disappoints in the poseability department, but the Black Knight figure is a good example of how to make the “HasJoint” articulation work. The figure has ball joints in the neck, mid torso, shoulders, elbow, hips, knees, and ankles. He has a swivel in the waist and gloves. Basically, the articulation for this Black Knight is simple but functional. Higher scores would have been given for mid foot articulation and wrist joints.
Poseability: B+
Black Knight poses very well for a Hasbro Marvel Legends figure. The shoulder armor hinders shoulder articulation, so you can forget about that raised sword pose. Other than that, he looks really good standing with other Avengers or fighting his enemies.
Overall: A-
This figure was better than I expected. Black Knight passes, but without flying colors. The paint applications were not sloppy, but color choices made for a figure that looked too much like plastic, which is what it is composed of, but I’m sure a lot of customizers are gonna do some really great upgrades to this awesome figure. So far, this is my favorite figure from the Hasbro Marvel Legends line. Action figure perfection was only eluded by missing articulation in the mid foot, ankles, hands, and biceps. A removable helmet would have been a great bonus. I highly recommend this figure; it gives me some hope that Hasbro can actually produce a good-looking figure that works well alone or with previous Marvel Legends. Now excuse me while I go hunt for a Shadowfax horse to go with this knight.
